Alonzo Mourning Named As The NBA Legend Of The Year
MIAMI, 02/16 The NBA announced that Miami HEAT Vice President, Player Programs Alonzo Mourning has been named as the 2010 NBA Legend of the Year. Mourning received the honor from NBA commissioner David Stern at the annual Legends Brunch on Sunday, February 14, 2010 during NBA All-Star Weekend.
"This is a tremendous honor," said Mourning during the ceremony. "The work that I have done on the court is nothing compared to the work that I have to continue to do on this earth, to continue to make this world a better place."
Mourning, with the help of Project Medishare (www.projectmedishare.org), recently made several trips to Haiti following the devastating earthquake to help in relief efforts and has since raised more than one million dollars to help in recovery efforts. The 15-year NBA veteran and 2006 NBA Champion established Alonzo Mourning Charities (www.amcharities.org), a not-for-profit 501c3 foundation, which is designed to raise money for various organizations that support abused and neglected children, including children who live in at-risk situations.
This past summer he completed his 13th annual Summer Groove which has raised over $7 million dollars to date while also establishing Zo's Fund For Life, which he formed after being diagnosed with focal glomerulosclerosis, a degenerative kidney aliment, during the 2001-02 season raising $2 million dollars for kidney research and to help provide medication to families that cannot afford it. In addition, he hosts the annual Zo's Million Dollar Shootout in New York as well as Zo's 8-Ball Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend which all contribute to his fundraising efforts.
During the holiday season, Mourning personally delivers Thanksgiving meals door-to-door in the South Florida community for families in need through his campaign, 33 Thanksgivings. The two-time NBA Community Assist Award winner (July 2006 and July 2008), co-founded The Overtown Youth Center in South Florida. The center is the first in the area and its mission is to inspire and empower youth and families by fostering hope through enrichment services. In addition to expanding his fundraising efforts to include more than seven annual events throughout the country, Mourning also currently serves as spokesperson for the National Kidney Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
