Jan 26 2005 4:31PM
MIAMI, Jan. 26 – The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed free agent forward Qyntel Woods, waived forward Jerome Beasley and placed Wesley Person on the injured list with patella tendinitis of the right knee. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Woods, in his third NBA season, has averaged 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game with the Portland Trail Blazers. In 62 games (eight starts) with the Trail Blazers last season, he averaged 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.9 minutes per game. He was waived by the Trail Blazers on January 21, 2005 without playing a game this season.

A 6’8”, 221-pound forward, Woods was drafted by the Trail Blazers with the 21st pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. Prior to that, he spent two years at Moberly Arena Junior College in Missouri before transferring to Northeast Mississippi Community College where he averaged 32.3 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game in 23 games.

On October 29, 2004, Woods was suspended without pay for five games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program. Woods’ suspension will begin with the first game he is eligible to play; tonight’s contest versus the Toronto Raptors.

Beasley was selected by the HEAT with the 33rd pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. He appeared in two games for Miami, averaging 1.0 points in 2.5 minutes per game. He began the regular season on the injured list with a lower back strain.
