HEAT Signs Shane Battier
MIAMI, December 9 The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed free agent forward Shane Battier. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Battier, a 10-year NBA veteran, has appeared in 767 regular season games (619 starts) averaging 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.08 steals, 1.01 blocks and 32.9 minutes while shooting 44.3 percent from the field, 38.5 percent from three-point range and 74.5 percent from the foul line. He currently is the all-time Memphis Grizzlies all-time leader in steals (523). He also ranks among the Grizzlies all-time leaders in blocks (3rd, 428), three-point field goals made (3rd, 403), games played (3rd, 419), three-point field goals attempted (4th, 1,062), minutes (4th, 13,338), games started (5th, 279), points (6th, 4,275), rebounds (7th, 2,000) and assists (10th, 716).
He has appeared in 51 career postseason games (34 starts) averaging 7.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 32.7 minutes while shooting 43.4 percent from the field, 36 percent from three-point range and 75 percent from the foul line. During the 2011 NBA Playoffs, he helped lead the Grizzlies to the Western Conference Semifinals, their longest postseason run in franchise history.
Battier split last season between the Houston Rockets and the Grizzlies appearing in 82 regular season games (59 starts) and averaged 7.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.98 blocks and 28.9 minutes while shooting 45 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from three-point range and 68.8 percent from the foul line.
In addition to his contributions on the court, the former 2001 NCAA Champion Duke Blue Devil was honored with the NBA Community Assist Award in April of 2002 while also being named as the Southwest Division winner for the NBA Sportsmanship Award on three occasions (2004-05, 2006-07, 2007-08) and presented the 2006-07 Magic Johnson Award which is given annually by the Professional Basketball Writers Association to the player who combines excellence on the court with outstanding cooperation with the media.
Battier was originally drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round (6th overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft.
