MIAMI, August 26 – The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed forward Matt Freije, their second-round selection (53rd pick) in the 2004 NBA Draft. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Freije (6-10, 249-pounds) appeared in five games for the HEAT in the Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando, averaging 10.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 24.6 minutes per game. In his final game of the league, he shot 8-for-12 from the field (5-for-6 3FG) for a total of 25 points and 8 rebounds in 32 minutes.

In four seasons at Vanderbilt University, Freije averaged 15.6 points and 4.9 rebounds. He earned Third Team All-American honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and was a finalist for the Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Award and the John R. Wooden Award. He completed his career as Vanderbilt’s all-time leading scorer with 1,891 points, also ranking second in free throws made (446), third in blocked shots (72) and sixth in three-point field goals made (183).

As a senior, Freije averaged a team-high 18.4 points (ranking first in the SEC) and 5.4 rebounds. He was also named First Team All-SEC by the Associated Press and the league’s coaches. During his junior season, he averaged 17.9 points and 4.4 rebounds, earning him Second Team All-SEC honors from the league’s coaches. As a sophomore, he averaged 15.1 points and 5.1 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. He earned SEC Player of the Week honors and was named Third Team All-SEC by the league’s coaches. Freije led his team in three-point field goal percentage (.390) and blocked shots (28) as a freshman and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
