Miami HEAT to “Shoot for the Stars”

MIAMI, July 5 – The Miami HEAT has teamed up with FedEx, AmericanAirlines and Gatorade to host the Miami HEAT ‘Shoot for the Stars’ Summer 2005 Books and Basketball Clinics. HEAT forward Rasual Butler and HEAT Community Affairs Liaison Wali Jones will head to Puerto Rico this weekend to provide a complimentary basketball clinic for inner-city youth. This is the first of three stops on the tour, which will also hit the Bahamas and Trinidad later this month. Entertainment will be provided by the Xtreme Team and the HEAT Dancers.

Butler and Jones will kick off the weekend at 11AM on Friday, July 8 with a press conference at the host property Ritz-Carlton San Juan Hotel (La Luna Room). On Saturday, July 9, the HEAT will conduct a clinic at Coliseito Pedrin Zorrilla beginning at 10AM for roughly 200 pre-selected youth. The clinic will be followed by an hour-long reading event, held at the same location. In addition to providing instructional lessons, motivational speaking, and the skills necessary for the fundamentals of basketball, each clinic will promote the NBA/Miami HEAT Read to Achieve initiative, the year-round campaign to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly with children. Participants will receive book bags provided by FedEx, HEAT promotional items, prizes and awards for competition during the activities.

At 1PM, the HEAT will head to a local Walmart for an autograph signing with Butler, Jones, the Xtreme team and HEAT Dancers. The HEAT will then travel to Hospital De Niños San Jorge to visit sick children.

As the Official Delivery Service of the Miami HEAT and AmericanAirlines Arena, FedEx will complement its sponsorship of the clinics with volunteer work by local FedEx employees at all the locations, as well as the donation of transportation of all the clinic equipment.
