Border’s Event

Aug 16 2004 4:46PM
The Miami HEAT, led by Community Affairs Liaison Wali Jones, welcomed children of all ages to the “Shoot for the Stars Books and Basketball Clinic” on Wednesday, August 11 at Borders bookstore in Plantation. Joining Jones was John Cooper, author of the “Dewey Does” book series, the HEAT Dancers and the Xtreme Team, who conducted a free outdoor basketball clinic and an indoor read-aloud. The event, highlighting the HEAT’s Read to Achieve initiative, was designed to stress the importance of reading as well as basketball fundamentals.

Early in the morning, children were invited to partake in a free outdoor basketball clinic in the parking lot at Borders bookstore. Wali Jones taught key basketball fundamentals, and encouraged positive attitudes, a good work ethic and teamwork. Participants received gifts, prizes and awards for their involvement.

The event then moved inside Borders bookstore for a read-aloud featuring John Cooper, author of the popular book series, “Dewey Does.” Cooper, who is a member of the HEAT’s All-Star Reading Team, created the book series about a sports-oriented character who deals with social issues affecting children.

The event, which was one of approximately thirty held by the HEAT this summer, was made possible by the generosity of Borders bookstore, American Airlines and Gatorade.
