HEAT Welcome Students Back to School
In an effort to help ease the nervousness of beginning a new school year, HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy and HEAT players Rasual Butler and Dorell Wright set their alarms bright and early right along with the students on Monday, August 16.
Butler and Wright helped young children cross the street at the crosswalk of Coral Reef Elementary, while Van Gundy gave children HEAT folders to help them organize their school materials as they entered the building. Burnie the HEAT mascot, the Xtreme Team, the HEAT Dancers, Community Affairs Liaison Wali Jones and Mike Baiamonte, the HEAT’s Public Address Announcer joined the group to help create a fun environment and ease the children’s first day jitters. Immediately following the event, the group paid a surprise visit to Southwood Middle School. After a stop in the school’s cafeteria to greet the students, the group roamed the halls and gave words of encouragement to the students. Butler, Wright, Baiamonte and Burnie also stopped in the principal’s office to film a “Welcome Back” message to all of the students that aired over the school’s closed circuit television system. Despite Butler telling the students to enjoy a half-day, everyone seemed to enjoy their first full day back at school! |
