Draft 2003: Q and A with Reece Gaines

So, how did the audition go?

Gaines: I hit my shots pretty well towards the end of the workout. The biggest thing I try to do is come in here and work as hard as I could, play hard and try to compete. For my size, people don't really believe I am as quick as I am, and this is a chance to show them up-close that I really am that quick and I work really hard."

Do you have expectations?

Gaines: "For me, it's going in to the right situation with the right coach, someone who really wants me to have the chance to play...I just want somebody to give me a chance so I can show what I can do."

How do you think you fit in with the HEAT? With Caron now?

Gaines:I would love to play with CB, he's tough, from the same area in Wisconsin...I played (against) Connecticut in college. I remember back in the day he was a little fat kid who could jump, he was great back then too...I think I could fit in here, I know the point guard spot is something they're looking at."

Reese, going from Pitino, and if you were to come to the HEAT, to Coach Riley, it would be a perfect fit for you - the solid coaching, a coach who can make you better...

Gaines: "Yes, that's what I am used to at this point. It's been a habit to work hard. It's been a habit getting yelled at, getting challenged - that's what I'm used to now. I'd be able to take the criticism and the tough coaching because I know he's just trying to make me a better player and trying to win."
