Wade Named All-Star Starter
January 21, 2009 - MIAMI, FL The NBA announced Thursday that Dwyane Wade was selected as a starter for the Eastern Conference in a vote of the fans for the 2009 NBA All-Star Game. The 58 th NBA All-Star Game will be played at the US Airways Center in Phoenix , AZ on Sunday, February 15 at 8PM ET and be broadcast nationally on TNT . Wade is joined by Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard (the top vote-getter), Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James, Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett and Detroit Pistons guard Allen Iverson as Eastern Conference starters. The Western Conference starters are San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan, Phoenix Suns forward Amar'e Stoudemire, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul. The Eastern and Western Conference reserves will be selected by the league's 30 head coaches and will be announced on Thursday, Jan. 29 on TNT .
Wade finished as the top vote-getter among Eastern Conference guards with 2,741,413 votes; the fourth-most single season votes for an NBA All-Star in NBA history. The 2009 All-Star appearance will mark his fifth consecutive and the fourth straight year in which he was named a starter.
In his four previous All-Star appearances, he has averaged 14.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.50 steals, 0.75 blocks and 25.0 minutes while shooting 56.3 percent from the floor. Wade was the back-to-back winner of the Playstation Skills Challenge at All-Star Weekend having won the award in both 2007 and 2006. Additionally, Wade hit the game-winning field goal in the 2006 All-Star Game at Houston .
Wade currently leads the NBA in scoring average (28.8 ppg), ranks second in steals (2.27), ninth in assists (7.3), 10 th in minutes (38.3) and 19 th in blocks (1.54).
