Wherever he is, whatever time of year, Coach Spo finds time for fitness. Some days, staying fit might mean a quick game-day workout in the weight room. Other days, Coach Spo goes for a run, or takes one of his favorite spinning or yoga classes.

Coach Spo, with the support of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, proud partner of the Miami HEAT, is now partnering with the NBA and NBA Cares as a member of the NBA FIT team.  The FIT team is made up of NBA Family members including players, coaches, offiicials, trainers and health-related experts who serve as ambassadors and positive role models for children and parents alike. As a FIT team member, Coach Spo will attend grassroot fitness events, promote valuable fitness information and continue to make good healthy life choices. NBA FIT is a program of NBA CARES.

In honor of NBA FIT Week, 100 children inner-city middle schools were pre-selected in the Miami area pledged their fitness commitment and New Year’s Resolutions to the Miami HEAT and the NBA on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at W South Beach.  Coach Spo was on hand to encourage the children in their fitness goals.  Also joining the festivities were HEAT Assistant Coaches, HEAT Television Play-by-Play announcer Eric Reid, the Miami HEAT Dancers, Burnie the HEAT Mascot, and numerous community leaders.

As part of the program, Coach Spo has created this section on, and renamed it “Spo on the Go.”  This page will provide fans with insight and an opportunity to learn about healthy living, while also getting an understanding of how physical fitness is important to the success of Miami HEAT players and the Miami HEAT organization.  The section will also include monthly updates with Coach Spo’s healthy meal favorites and selections along with workout tips…

NBA FIT encourages physical activity and healthy living through products, events and programs for children and their families, while providing youngsters with an opportunity to participate, free of charge, in exciting fitness competitions.  The goal of NBA FIT is to engage one million children, adults and families to pledge NBA FIT during the 2009-10 season.

JANUARY – Breakfast
Scrambled Eggs and Turkey Bacon
Fresh whole scrambled eggs or egg whites and oven roasted Jennie “O” Turkey Bacon
“This is a great morning breakfast to take on the go, I love the crispy turkey bacon.”

Egg White and Broccoli Wrap
Scrambled egg whites, fresh raw broccoli and a whole wheat tortilla wrap
“This is my favorite healthy option in the morning for breakfast.”

FEBRUARY – Smoothie

Blueberries, Bananas, Oatmeal, Flax Seed, Protein Powders and Skim Milk

MARCH – Lunch
Chicken Burrito
Low carb with fresh chicken and light cheese.  Extra tomatoes are a must along with light brown rice, beans and salsa.  Having a variety of sauces to dip in is a great alternative to chips.

BBQ Turkey Wrap or Turkey Burger
Fresh ground white and dark meat turkey, fresh BBQ sauce, onions and extra tomatoes rolled up in a whole wheat tortilla.

APRIL – Snacks 
Fresh Watermelon & Feta Salad with Cucumbers and Extra Tomatoes
Watermelon, Fresh Mint, Crumbled Feta Cheese

Fresh Fruit Parfait
Grapes, Kiwi, Pineapple, Granola and Plain Yogurt
