MIAMI , April 17 – The NBA announced this afternoon that Miami HEAT forward Michael Beasley has been named the T-Mobile NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for April. This marks Beasley's first Rookie of the Month selection and only the second player in franchise history to earn Rookie of the Month honors. Caron Butler received the accolades on four occasions during the 2002-03 season. Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo was named as the T-Mobile NBA Western Conference Rookie of the Month.
Beasley led all rookies in scoring, averaging 20.6 points while shooting 55.3 percent from the field, second among rookies. Additionally, the number two overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft averaged 8.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.00 steals and 31.5 minutes while shooting 50 percent from three-point range. He posted three consecutive double-doubles, recording 23 points and 13 rebounds at Boston on April 10, a career-tying 28 points and career-high 16 rebounds vs. New York on April 12 and 23 points and 13 rebounds at Atlanta on April 14. During that stretch, he became the first rookie to record three consecutive double-doubles with minimums of 23 points and 13 rebounds since Tim Duncan accomplished the feat during the 1997-98 season. His 16 rebounds vs. New York on April 12 included a new HEAT franchise rookie record 14 defensive rebounds. Additionally, he shot 77.8 percent on 7-of-9 from the field at Charlotte on April 3, dropped 25 points playing in a career-high 47:45 minutes vs. New Orleans on April 7 and scored 22 points vs. Detroit including 66.7 percent on 2-of-3 from three-point range in the regular season finale on April 15.
Among rookies this season, Beasley finished fifth in scoring average (13.9), fifth in field goal percentage (.472), sixth in rebounds per game (5.4), eighth in free throw percentage (.772) and 16 th in assists (1.0). He ranked second on the team in scoring average, points (1,123), games played, field goals made (452), field goals attempted (957), free throws made (186), free throws attempted (241) offensive rebounds (110), defensive rebounds (329) and total rebounds (439).
