Finally fully healthy, Wade continued his dramatic maturation, leading the HEAT deep into the second round of the 2004 NBA Playoffs.

Wade led the HEAT in scoring in seven of its 13 playoff games, scoring at least 20 points in all seven of those games and averaging a team-high 18.0 points and 5.6 assists while shooting .455 from the field and stuffing the highlight reels with play after remarkable play.

Wade's playoff heroics started in the first round, when he led the HEAT to a seven-game series win over the New Orleans Hornets by averaging 15.4 points and 5.6 assists and hitting a pair of game-turning shots.

Wade scored the last two of his game-high 21 points on a beautiful drop-shot over All-Star guard Baron Davis with 1.2 seconds left to give the HEAT an 81-79 win over the Hornets in Game 1, and drilled a late corner three to key an 87-83 win and put the HEAT up 3-2 in Game 5. The HEAT advanced to face the top-seeded Indiana Pacers with an 85-77 win in Game 7.

Wade was even more dominant in the second round, averaging a team-high 21.0 points and 5.7 assists as the HEAT fell to the bigger, deeper Pacers in six games.

Wade led the HEAT in scoring in five of those six games, including a 25-point effort in a 94-87 Game 3 win and a 22-point performance in a 100-88 Game 4 rout that tied the series at 2-2. He scored 14 points in the decisive fourth quarter of Game 3, including a thunderous dunk over 7-foot Pacers All-Star Jermaine O'Neal.

Wade posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists in a 94-83 Game 5 loss, and nearly pushed the series to a seventh game by scoring 10 of his team-high 24 points in the fourth quarter of Game 6. But the HEAT struggled to hit shots in that game, and fell 73-70 to end its stunning season.

"You just watched an outstanding talent start to really grow up," said HEAT head coach Stan Van Gundy after the playoffs. I think what was really remarkable during the Indiana series was his consistency throughout the series. I think what you expect to see from a guy of his talent is some amazing performances, but you don't expect the consistency against the NBA's number one team that he had in this series."
