April 22   The National Basketball Association officially welcomes the Miami franchise into the NBA. Expansion franchises are also granted to Charlotte, Orlando and Minnesota. The HEAT and Charlotte begin play in 1988-89 while Orlando and Minnesota start the following season.
September 28 Stu Inman, Director of Player Personnel for the Milwaukee Bucks, resigns to accept a similar position with the HEAT bringing to the franchise more than 18 years of personnel experience.
December 24 The franchise reaches the NBA mandated figure of 10,000 season tickets.
