HEAT Dancer Diary from Indonesia

DAY2 – FRIDAY (Indonesia). We’re not even sure what day it is! Our 2nd event yesterday was at the sponsor’s office. Jawa Pos – the local newspaper that is also #1 in the country. After the event, we had dinner at a local steak house. Then the jet lag kicked in. We could barely keep our eyes open at dinner. We went straight to bed, and luckily we slept through the 3am prayer call and service.

This morning we dressed in the traditional Kabayas for our visit to City Hall. We took tons of pictures.. Again we were treated like royalty. They had special seating for us inside City Hall as well as traditional fruit and food. Their fruit SALA was really good! We met with the mayor and a few other important delegates. They then presented us with a plaque of appreciation and gave each of us gifts. We took tons of photos with everyone and the Larry O’Brien trophy. Yes, they brought the trophy over! After we left City Hall, they took us on a guided tour of the city. This was perfect since we wanted to learn more about Surabaya. We had the chance to visit their museum (which is underground) and learned quite a bit about their culture.

After the tour, we went to the performance venue where we had lunch at a Korean/Japanese restaurant. The food was pretty good! We performed again and also judged a hip-hop dance contest. We were surprised how good some of the finalists were! The winning group could have competed on “America’s Best Dance Crew”. So far everything is going well, and the jet lag has worn off a bit. We have another event tonight with the NBA, so we’re off again! We will write you later.

DAY 1 – THURSDAY (Hong Kong to Indonesia). We were able to see a little bit of Hong Kong during our 10 hour layover. We caught a train into the city and explored downtown. We tried to find a place to have breakfast but everything was EXTREMELY exotic. We’re embarrassed to say we ended up at McDonalds but at least it was something familiar since we still had 8 hours until we reached our destination and been experiencing turbulent flights. We stopped by a couple street fairs and took a ride on the infamous escalator – the longest one in the world. We were traveling with our carry-ons, so we only made it half way up since you have to walk down stairs.

Once we landed in Indonesia, we were met my NBA security and the staff. Before leaving the airport we had to walk through a machine which sprayed us from head to toe with disinfectant! We traveled about 30 minutes to our hotel. The Sheraton is beautiful! The staff greeted all of us with a bouquet of roses. Everyone is extremely friendly here, and they are captivated by our diverse look.

We rehearsed last night and then tried to fall asleep. We were awakened at 3am to the sound of loud noises coming through a megaphone. At first we were scared but later realized it was prayer time. They pray here 5 times a day, and unfortunately one of those times is at 3am each morning. They even have arrows on the ceiling in the hotel rooms so you know which direction is West if you want to pray.

We just finished our 1st event, and we’re heading to our second event
