MIAMI, April 16 – The NBA announced today that Miami HEAT forward Shane Battier has been named the Southeast Division Sportsmanship Award winner and is also a finalist for the 2011-12 NBA Sportsmanship Award. He becomes the third HEAT player to win the divisional honor, joining Shaquille O’Neal (2005-06 Southeast Division) and LaPhonso Ellis (2001-02 Atlantic Division). Battier joins other division winners Antawn Jamison (Central), Jason Kidd (Southwest), Chris Paul (Pacific), Luke Ridnour (Northwest) and Jeremy Lin (Atlantic).
A panel of five former players including John Crotty, Greg Anthony, Antonio Davis, Eddie Johnson and Kenny Smith selected the six divisional winners from a pool of 30 team nominees. The six divisional winners are finalists for the 2011-12 NBA Sportsmanship Award, which is designed to honor a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court and will be voted on by NBA players.
The 2011-12 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner will be presented with the Joe Dumars Trophy. The annual award reflects the ideals of sportsmanship -- ethical behavior, fair play and integrity -- in amateur and professional basketball, a key focus of the league’s NBA Cares program efforts. The NBA will announce the winner after the regular season.
