Saks Sharp Dressed Man Event

Oct 28 2003 2:03PM

MIAMI, Oct. 23 - HEAT players Dwyane Wade, Rasual Butler and Malik Allen kicked off the HEAT’s Read To Achieve educational program in late October as part of Saks Fifth Avenue’s charity benefit, “Sharp Dressed Men 2003.”

Gathered in the men’s shoe department of Saks Fifth Avenue’s Bal Harbour location with 25 students chosen from a recent HEAT Academy Back To School contest at Dunbar Elementary in Overtown, the HEAT players lead a group read-aloud session with animal-themed books. To make for a cozier atmosphere, FAO Schwartz provided stuffed animals. The HEAT Dancers and Burnie the HEAT mascot were also there to keep the kids entertained.

Following the Read To Achieve program, Dwyane, Rasual and Malik turned in their uniforms and sneakers for trendsetting apparel and dress shoes and showed off their chic designer menswear at the NBA/Saks Fifth Avenue’s most prestigious charitable and fashion event of the year, wherein a portion of the evening’s sales benefited NBA partner Reading Is Fundamental (RIF). The HEAT’s own Public Address Announcer Mike Baiamonte hosted the event, which was also presented by Ocean Drive Magazine.

Saks Event
Through the HEAT’s Read To Achieve program, which promotes the value of reading and encourages parents and adults to develop a lifelong love of reading, the HEAT players make it a priority to frequently visit South Florida locations to meet with children and read to them.

The NBA has elected several NBA markets to host these “Sharp Dressed Men” events. In each city, ten men are awarded and honored for their commitment to the community. Following the reading session, Saks recognized Dwyane, Rasual and Malik, along with community men Jorge Perez, Dan Le Batard, Dr. Steve Poliakoff, Alan Randolph, Jerry Powers, Jorge A. Plasencia and Eliott Rodriguez during a cocktail reception.
