Teaming up to stress the importance of water safety to children throughout South Florida, the Miami HEAT joined the American Red Cross of Greater Miami & The Keys and the City of Miami Springs April 9th to help launch a water safety awareness campaign with “April Pools Day” at the City of Miami Springs Recreational Complex. HEAT center Brian Grant and HEAT mascot Burnie joined children in the pool during their swimming instruction to help ease any nervousness, make their lessons fun and raise awareness about the importance of swimming safely. Many of the children were first-time swimmers.
The event launched a “Learn to Swim” water safety awareness campaign throughout South Florida sponsored by the Miami HEAT and the American Red Cross of Greater Miami and the Keys. The HEAT will continue to stress the importance of the need for parents and children to learn how to swim and to be cautious in the water throughout the summer with community appearances and on www.HEAT.com.
"We live in an area where there is water all around us," said Grant. "It only takes a split-second for a child, or even an adult, to get in trouble and even lose their life if they're not careful. I have children close to the same age as the kids here. Water safety is for everybody. They could drown, I could drown, if were not careful and really take these safety tips and use them."
Children participating in April Pools Day were from the HEAT’s after-school program HEAT Academy at Riverside Elementary and Community School. Information was also available for families to learn about their nearest Red Cross certified facility for swimming lessons.
“Water safety instruction is a key component to keeping children safe, particularly with so many beaches, lakes,
canals and pools in South Florida,” said HEAT Director of Education Programs and Community Affairs Davrye Gibson-Smith. “We hope to help raise awareness about the importance of swimming safety and make summertime a fun and safe season for families.”
