MIAMI, May 15 – The Miami HEAT announced today the four recipients of its HEAT Scholarships – HEAT Student-Athlete Scholarship, Dr. Jack Ramsay Scholarship and two HEAT Scholarships. In its 11th year, the HEAT Scholarships, presented by Publix, offers $10,000 in scholarship funds to high school seniors attending Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties schools. The scholarships, valued at $2,500 each, are awarded based on academic performance, outstanding community service and financial need.

The following individuals are recipients of the HEAT Scholarships:

Ellita T. Williams- Student-Athlete Scholarship

Ellita T. Williams is the recipient of the Student-Athlete Scholarship, which is awarded to the student who shows excellence in the classroom, community, participates in sports and has a financial need.A senior at Mast Academy in Key Biscayne, Ellita currently holds a weighted 3.87 GPA, while captaining the girls track and field team, where she was named the 2005-06 MVP. She also serves as a cadet with the U.S. Coast Guard Junior ROTC program. In addition, Ellita also volunteers her free time at Jackson Memorial Hospital and received the Volunteer Recognition Award. She will attend the University of Central Florida, majoring in biology.


Jordan Bachenheimer- Dr. Jack Ramsay Scholarship

Jordan Bachenheimer is the recipient of the Dr. Jack Ramsay Scholarship, which is awarded to the student who excels in the classroom and community and who plans to pursue a degree in broadcast journalism or sports communication. Jordan is a senior at Cooper City High School and holds a weighted 4.0 GPA, while holding the post of sports editor at his school’s newspaper. He also volunteers his time at his local Boys & Girls Club and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Jordan will attend Florida State University and will major in communications.



Susana Prieto- HEAT Scholarship

Susana Prieto is a recipient of the HEAT Scholarship, which is given to two students who exemplify scholastic excellence, excellence in the community and have a financial need. Susana is a senior at Miami Beach High and holds a weighted 4.3 GPA. She is a member of Future Business Leaders of America and the Science Honor Society and volunteers at the City of Miami Beach Parks and Recreation X-Treme Cheerleading Program and Best Buddies Program. Susana will attend the University of Florida, where she will major in architecture.



Esther Mathurin- HEAT Scholarship

Esther Mathurin, a senior at Homestead High School, is the second recipient of the HEAT Scholarship. Esther has an astonishing weighted 5.4 GPA, which ranks second in her class. She is involved with her high school’s Math Honor Society and National Honor Society and volunteers with the Mayor’s Youth Council and Homestead Hospital. She will be attending the University of Miami, majoring in biology.
