April 6, 2008 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 75 | Detroit Pistons - 91
HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the game:
“Unlike the other night, we could not make anything tonight. We have not really established a driving game since Dwyane has been out, so most of the time we are relegated to jumpers. That is where we were tonight; we could not make much and could not get much of a run going.”
On the health of Jason Williams:
“He was able to play. He was out there in the first half playing, but I think a good day of working tomorrow and two more games next week [will help]. I want to keep looking at the young kids. I know what J-Will can do.”
On the play of Chris Quinn:
“Quinny, with all the things that have gone wrong this year, has gone absolutely right. [He is] totally right in every aspect of the game. He is probably the most professional player we have on the team. He just is. I don’t care how young he is or if he does play or doesn’t play or whatever. [He is] the most professional player we have on our team right now. He has improved, his attitude is right, his character is right, and I think he will be in a spot to have some demands in Free Agency. I am very interested in bringing a guy like Quinny back. Those are the type of guys you want around.”
On the coaching of so many young players:
“You just need to keep being honest with them about their play. The thing about Earl [Barron], Stephane [Lasme], and Joel [Anthony] is that they have to finish. They have to finish at the rim. I am not talking about finishing all the time, but they either need to get to the free throw line or turn those into three-point plays. They have a lot of opportunity to do that. It is an ongoing process with young players trying to teach them.”
HEAT Guard Chris Quinn
On his performance recently:
“I’m just getting an opportunity and going out there and competing. Obviously it is not the best situation and not the situation we thought we’d be in at the beginning of the year. With five-of-six games remaining, all we can do is go out there and play with pride and play as hard as we can and show what we can do out there.”
On the up-coming off season:
“I would definitely like to be back in Miami (next season) but, I’m not really thinking about it too much. We have five games left and I’m just concentrating on finishing those out as strong as possible and hopefully getting some wins.”
HEAT Guard Marcus Banks
On his injury:
“It’s disappointing to me because, of course, I want to be out there playing and helping those guys out. Also, it is repetition for me; learning the plays and getting the system down. First things first, and getting me healthy is the first option.”
Pistons Head Coach Flip Saunders

On the Game:
“I thought we really protected the rim a lot. They executed well, I thought our young guys came in did a nice job and found a way to finish. There is no question that Stuck (Rodney Stuckey) was very good again.”
On Rodney Stuckey:
“He has been very consistent on how he has played so hopefully he keeps it up. You’re talking about a guy who hasn’t had much practice time because he is hurt so much he has only played half the season. If he was in baseball, he would still be a rookie next year. But he is not. You get halfway through, you start figuring things out. Right now he’s not thinking on the court, he is reacting. He is doing his thinking prior to games whether it would be scouting reports or whether it be just game preparation, he has worked on his shot a lot, he’s got a lot of confidence on his shots. He has done a lot of things in preparation to set himself up to get on the floor. All he has got to do is just play, he doesn’t have to think as much.”
On Detroit’s Defense:
That’s one of our main strengths. Our main strength is the ability to protect the paint. That’s one of the things we have been consistent through most of the year. We have been able to protect the paint.”
Pistons Guard Arron Afflalo
On the game:
“We’re really learning how to play as a unit from a bench standpoint, and individually, guys are getting more comfortable: (Rodney) Stuckey, Jarvis (Hayes), everybody. We’re really playing great. That’s always a positive thing going into the playoffs.”
“I’m fine. It’s about being mentally tough and trying to get better every day. You just put your best foot forward – it’s the most important time.”
Pistons Forward Antonio McDyess
On young players gelling:
“It’s really good to watch. It’s key, seeing the way that they’re playing together. I’ve always said to them, years down the road if they stay together, they’re going to be the team to beat. They are definitely playing up to the level of competition. Not even like they’re bench players, but like they’ve already been out there and they’re just confident.”
“The bench has definitely been playing a big role and giving us rest. Since we’ve been getting rest this year, I didn’t need it. When they go out, it’s like ‘okay, I know I’m going to go back to the bench, so I can give it all I’ve got when I get on the floor.’ I think that’s been the difference between coming out there and playing with a meaning, so I think that’s been good.”
Pistons Guard Rodney Stuckey
On the game:
“I’m not out there thinking about anything, I’m just playing. That’s what I’m doing. When I’m out there thinking about a lot of stuff, I just make mistakes and what not, so I’m out there just freeballing and playing my game.”
“That’s just how I was in college. I was the guy to go to in college. My team needs me to be aggressive like I did in college. I averaged 25 points in college, so it’s just when I’m out on the court, I need to be aggressive and just do what I do.”
