Acting HEAT Head Coach Ron Rothstein

On Daequan Cook’s progress:
“It is part of the education process and the NBA life. It is not unique to Daequan Cook and it won’t ever be. It will always be a part of the process of young kids coming into the NBA.”
On Joel Anthony:
“He tries to do what we want him to do. He makes a big-time effort and he is willing to put his body on the line. He is a very good screener and he frees up our guards quite often. He is a very unselfish basketball player. He is coming around and he’s doing a nice job.”
HEAT Guard Jason Williams
On the game:
“They (the Bobcats) were better than us tonight. Our defensive rotation wasn’t as good as what it could have been. Some people may think that fatigue had a lot to do with us losing tonight, but that’s not the case. The Bobcats were better.”
HEAT Guard Chris Quinn
On the rest of the season:
“We are trying to compete and win every night. We know that we’ve been playing a lot of games recently. We just need to do a better job of putting ourselves in a better position to win basketball games.”
HEAT Guard Daequan Cook
On the game:
“The Bobcats were more aggressive tonight. They really stepped up the intensity in the second half. They played well on the offensive and defensive end.”
On this season as an NBA rookie:
“This season has been quite an experience as a rookie. I play the two-guard position. This is one of the toughest positions to play because you play against some of the best scorers in the world. All I have to do is go out and play hard every night.”
Charlotte Bobcats Head Coach Sam Vincent
On tonight’s win:
“After we warmed up a bit and got things going we played really well. I was happy to see our guys mentally stable, especially after five losses. It’s challenging to come back and get a win. I am very proud of my guys for getting back home and getting over the road blues. The Miami team is very dangerous.”
On Gerald Wallace’s play in tonight’s win:
“Gerald is really getting back into his form. He’s not settling for the jump shot and he’s attacking the rim. He is so quick and strong that it’s hard for people to stay in front of him and that puts pressure on the defense. Gerald is a fearless competitor and he’s not going to change his game because of the concussion or the injuries. He is, in big part, the heart and soul of this team. When he’s going and going well this team is pretty strong.”
On the team’s ratio of jump shots vs. drives:
“To measure how that affects us, we now consciously take stats on the bench. We measure our jump shot vs. drive ratio now, which is something that we weren’t doing earlier in the season. When we get too far out of whack with jump shots we show them (the team) and they make a conscious effort to change it.”
On playing Earl Boykins and Raymond Felton at the same time:
”I liked the way Boykins was playing tonight and I wanted to keep him on the floor. He was playing a little more aggressive and he was making his shots, but he also was doing so many other little things that you don’t see. Boykins will turn the corner and spot (Emeka) Okafor on the baseline for a jump shot or drive the baseline and find the guys for a three on the drift. So he makes a lot of things happen and we would like to be able to play him and Felton together; it just depends on the match-up of the other guards.”
On Nazr Mohammed’s play:
“He was really good tonight. He had 16 points and 14 rebounds in 26 minutes. He has good hands, he can move and he can pass to people. So down the stretch we decided to go with him just because he was playing well. I think that’s what we’ve got to do; when we’ve got a group that’s playing well we’ve got to go with it and try to win games.”
Charlotte Bobcats Forward Gerald Wallace
On driving to the basket instead of shooting jumpers:
“That’s what I was trying to get back to. I told the trainers that I’m feeling a lot better. I’m still not 100%, but I’m close – I’d say 95 or 98. I’m getting there.”
On his play:
“My main thing (tonight) was to be more aggressive. I actually posted up a lot more than I have in a while. (In the previous games since returning from the injury), I settled for the jump shot. Once the jump shot started falling, I got complacent and started settling for it a lot of the time instead of taking the opportunity to drive to the basket. Tonight I made an effort to get more aggressive to the basket.”
Charlotte Bobcats Guard Jason Richardson
On his play:
“A lot of teams have been pushing up on me since I have been shooting the ball well lately from the three-point line, so I’ve been trying to make an effort to go to the rim. (Gerald Wallace and I) are both making an effort to get to the rim.”
On the team’s play:
“During the winning streak, everybody was feeling good and the jumpers were falling. During the losing streak, when the jumper wasn’t falling, we were still relying on it. I think we’re doing a better job of getting to the basket. Coach (Vincent) is making us aware of it when we are settling for jumpers.”
