March 10, 2008 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 98 | Los Angeles Clippers - 99
HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the game:
“We had a chance to win. The same thing happens. Night in and night out we get close. We have the lead and we can’t make one stop. It’s a couple of plays. We just have to win some.”
“We had a great second half. I thought we had an average fourth quarter. We made some big plays and big shots just to get close again, but for the most part we came up short.”
“There are some nights that we simply get outplayed by a better team. They may be deeper, more committed or have something really at stake. Like Golden State the other night.”
“We were a little flat to start the game, but in the second quarter we picked it up. In the third quarter we really came out and played hard.”
“We got some good shots. It doesn’t make a difference. We had a one point lead with 4.7 seconds to go. The whole objective of a possession is to contain and make the guy take the tough shot. We actually went for the steal. I think we went for the steal and that let [Cuttino] Mobley go right down into the basket.”
On the Heat’s fight to come back from a 16 point deficit:
“In the third quarter we came out and defended for about five or six minutes real hard. We got back into the game. It was a game. Then we went ahead. We had a nice lead, then they got right back into it. I think we had a 10 point lead for a while. Before we knew it, they were tied again and it was a game.”
HEAT Guard Ricky Davis
On the last shot:
“I got a good look. I think he (Cuttino Mobley) got a piece of it and maybe made it rattle out. It was what we look for.”
“It was a good look and what we wanted. It just didn’t go down. I thought it was good… It rimmed out of there. It is the way it has been going.”
On the game:
“It’s always good when you’re short handed and guys go out there and make it a game.”
“We have always been there, all year. It’s just been a matter of closing games.”
HEAT Guard Daequan Cook
On the game:
“It’s about building the confidence back. We were a lot more aggressive tonight than the last 20 games or so.”
On his confidence:
“That was the purpose of going down to the D League. Not to just to get better, but to also gain my confidence. It’s been a while since I’ve shot like that.”
“I didn’t really change a lot. It was just me doing the things I did in the beginning of the season. I just have to continue to get better and better every game.”
On the team:
“You’ve just got to fight through this. It’s about progressing and learning from stuff like this. It’s more of a learning process now for all of us, especially me.”
HEAT Forward Shawn Marion
On the game:
“Too bad we couldn’t pull it out in the end. I thought we had it too. It was a frustrating loss. We kept fighting. We just came up short again.”
“It’s the NBA. It’s not always going to be easy. You just have to fight through it, night in and night out.”
On Daequan Cook:
“I told him that every time he gets a look to shoot that thing. I think he just has to stay aggressive. He was making some good plays off of pick-and-rolls. When he gets more comfortable on the floor, I think he’ll be good.”
Clippers Head Coach Mike Dunleavy
On the game:
“I see (Cuttino) Mobley gave us a big lift, particularly in the second half when he brought us back.”
“We executed our plays, we had good shots, we got to the free throw line.”
On what turned Cuttino Mobley on:
“South Beach I guess. He has got a good rhythm, he’s that type of player, comes off of screens to make shots, but he is a veteran guy and once he got the hot hand we just kind of kept going to him.”
Clippers Guard Cuttino Mobley
On the Heat’s third-quarter run:
“We turned the ball over, we became lackadaisical and carefree, and they came back on us.”
On the game:
“We’ve got guys on the team that can play. We just go out there and guys are looking for you, and you’re making plays. I’ve been doing this for nine years.”
“Going to shootaround, we found out that (Dwyane Wade) was out for the season. We didn’t adjust anything.”
“Cook (Daequan Cook) keeps struggling. He hit some shots, so good for him. I tried to give him some tips in the game, but I should have waited until after the game because he hit some good shots. And Ricky (Davis) always scores well.”
Clippers Forward Corey Maggette
On the game:
“We dug it out. Cuttino (Mobley) stepped up and made some big free throws, Al (Thornton) tied the game up for us. They played extremely hard the second half. They came with a lot of aggressiveness. I’m just glad we withstood the big run.”
“Daequan Cook started to make some shots. He hadn’t made shots previously and he made shots like that against us. They made a nice run, played hard, shot it in, and were all over the boards. Ricky Davis played a great game. In the end, it came down to one little possession and free throws win games.”
“We’ve got some veterans on this team that really want to make plays. Cuttino really carried the team in the second half. He was the key to the game and made some big plays for us toward the end.”
