March 8, 2008 | Phillips Arena | Miami HEAT - 94 | Atlanta Hawks - 97
HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the game:
“In the last three or four minutes we just didn’t come at them with effort. Horford hit a jumper, then Joe Johnson hit a three, then they hit two free throws. We were unable to grab some loose balls, and the Hawks were able to take advantage of those situations. They were also able to make some key shots at different moments, and our defense just didn’t gel like it should have. They got some good looks at the basket tonight because of some breakdowns that we had.”
HEAT Guard Ricky Davis
On the game:
“It was really weird playing two games in one day, stepping right into the end of one game, and then coming out and playing another right away. I guess this will be a memorable night because of the two games. I’ve never done this since I’ve been playing, so I guess this is how baseball must be like.”
HEAT Forward Shawn Marion
On the game:
“This was an unusual situation, because when you lace them up each night, you expect to be playing a full game, not making up the end of another. I wasn’t even here for that situation. I thought the wait between games was too long, we should have started no more than five minutes after the end of the first one. You get loose and then go back in and have to come back out and get loose again.”
Hawks Head Coach Mike Woodson
Were these must win games?:
“They both were huge. It keeps us right in the hunt where we need to be. It’s been tough these last 11 games, prior to these two tonight. But our guys hung in there. That 51 seconds was a heck of a rush, us fighting to try to secure a win. I thought we made every play that we needed to make in that 51 seconds. They still had good looks at the bucket, but it rolled in our favor, which was kind of nice to see.”
On Joe Johnson:
“He knows how close we are. We’re right there on the bubble. I don’t know what the other teams did tonight. We gained some ground by winning two games in one night. We just have to build on this game. We have 20 games left and I don’t know what it’s going to even take to make the playoffs here in the East. I know we control our own destiny and we have to play playoff basketball these last 20 games.”
“I’ve been in this league 25 years, and I’ve never been a part of anything like that. From a coaching standpoint, it was a (heck) of a rush, I know that. Just inbounding the ball and playing 51 seconds, it was unbelievable.”
Hawks Forward Josh Smith
On Joe Johnson:
“Those close games, those are games you have to win, especially at home. It was real big that we pulled it out down the stretch.”
On defense:
“We let them get 59 points in the first half, and we know that they’re not a high-scoring team. That’s unacceptable for us, so we wanted to make it a priority in the third quarter to lock down. We were able to do that, limiting them to 11 points in the third quarter, which was outstanding for us. We just wanted to get the momentum. These two games were big for us.”
Hawks Guard Mike Bibby
On the key to your defense:
“Stay together as a team, offensively and defensively. Things take care of themselves. Defense is going to turn into offense.”
Hawks Forward Marvin Williams
On the defensive effort in the second half:
“I think the urgency (was better). Up in Charlotte, we didn’t play with that sense of urgency. I think everybody knows what’s going on. Everybody’s trying to play as hard as they can to get to the playoffs.”
On Joe Johnson:
“Without that performance tonight, I don’t know what kind of chance we would have had to win. He carried us on offense, and played great defense on Wade. He’s an All-Star player, and that’s the type of things they have to do. He showed that.”
“Stay together as a team, offensively and defensively. Things take care of themselves. Defense is going to turn into offense.”
