February 1, 2008 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 85 | New Jersey Nets - 94
HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the game:
“To me, it’s trying to play 48 minutes of consistent, team-oriented, unselfish – on both ends of the court – basketball. You try to strive for that, and we just play the game in segments. It’s almost as though every time we do something offensively, it’s got to be a home run. It can’t be simple; it can’t be just moving the ball.”
“I saw a real scattered offense in the first half, and then in the second half as we played a little bit better offensively, defensively, we just gave them too many easy baskets. They’re not a big points-in-the-paint team. I think they had 46 points in the paint.”
On not Playing Daequan Cook:
“I just went with another lineup. He keeps stringing it out, but there’s nothing to it at all. I just went with Luke (Jackson) a long time. He’ll get back out there again. Dwyane (Wade) came back out into the fray tonight, I put Ricky (Davis) and Dorell (Wright) out there. I wanted to play Ricky for a few more minutes.”
On Dwyane Wade Coping with a Losing Season:
9“I don’t think there’s any doubt that this is the greatest test that he’s going to be faced with for the rest of the year, whether he likes it or not. This is a very, very tough test for him. He’s a great, great, great player. Our center is out, our power forward is out, and we’ve had a lot of different things happen with the team. He gets attacked every night with double teams. He’s got to find a peace within himself to play basketball, to just play the game and not fight the game, to not think he’s got to get 40 for us to even get close, but to just play the game and try to find as much joy in the game as he can without dealing with the consequences of the result. So I would imagine it’s very hard on him.”
HEAT Center Mark Blount
On losing:
“We just have to keep coming out and try to get the effort. Guys just have to be ready to come play, and play hard. Alexander Johnson came in and played well tonight.”
On the team’s defense around the basket:
“We just are not getting it done. We are prepared to do it. It’s not that we don’t know, we just need to get it done.
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the game:
“It’s tough. It’s challenging. From one minute to the next the way I approach things changes. I’m trying to be a professional. I’m trying to learn and understand that in life there are going to be ups and there is going to be downs and you’re judged by the way that you deal with them when you’re up and when you’re down. I just try to have consistency. I never come in and point a finger at anybody. I never blame anybody because I not above anyone.”
“Losing period is tough. Losing so many in a row. I think the toughest part is looking forward for the next 30 games and what are we looking forward to. I’m used to going into games feeling great and feeling very confident. Now you just go into games and you don’t know what to expect from one minute to the next.”
On what he was saying to Jason Kidd:
“It was about the USA team this summer when I was out there and I told him to pass me the ball in the All-Star game, to get some extra shots up. Doing some lobbying to my point guard.”
HEAT Forward Alexander Johnson
On his play tonight:
“You have to be ready when your name gets called. Fortunately, I was ready tonight.”
On the team’s record:
“Really what this is about now is playing for pride. It’s trying to hang in there and finish strong. We’re really playing for pride now.”
On the team’s defense around the basket:
“I think we are trying but just haven’t put it together yet. It’s just a matter of time. We just have a lot of mental breakdowns in the course of the game. We play good for two minutes and then for the other four minutes, we lose focus.
HEAT Forward Dorell Wright
On the game:
“We just have to continue to stay positive and play hard. It’s always disappointing when you lose.”
Nets Head Coach Lawrence Frank
On defending Dwyane Wade:
“I think we had really good defense against (Dwyane) Wade. We did a really good job with the pick and roll defense and as a team. I thought it was a good team win. I think one of the keys is the first five, four minutes in the fourth quarter at the bench keeping the game at ten, making some big offensive plays even when they (Miami HEAT) were scoring and then Richard (Jefferson) bringing us home and getting enough stops at the end to win the game.”
“I think our guys respect the fact that anyone in a Miami uniform, you have to be mentally and physically ready for a fight, and their last five games have gone down to the last minute or so.”
On the Nets defense:
“A silent hero in this game was Jason Collins, very good pick and roll defense, gave him some big minutes. There is a reason why those guys in that locker room, especially the ones who have been here a long time, (they) have won so many games and it’s because of the deep seeded character inside. Despite all the things that are going on the outside they are taking a very responsible and professional approach in terms of what we are going to do to prepare and we are going to play as long as we’re wearing those uniforms and I think that is a credit to them.”
NetsForward Richard Jefferson
On Dwyane Wade:
“We still have a long way to go. We beat Milwaukee at home without Michael Redd. We came in here against a team that has been struggling as of late. Even though we have been struggling also, we still have to expect a little more from ourselves. It is good to get two wins regardless of the situation, but we still feel like we have a long way to go. We feel like we can continue to improve. We had good ball movement. Guys hit shots. Vince Carter played well. This is one of those cliché team wins. Everyone took good shots. We only had 10 turnovers, which is extremely low for our team. Whenever we limit that and get good second shots, it is going to help us out.”
“Limiting Dwyane Wade was huge, especially with Shaquille O’Neal out. He is such a tremendous focus. He has been doing a great job all year long with the amount of pressure and responsibility that has been given to him. He is going to go out there and play extremely hard every day. Sometimes it is going to be there, sometimes it won’t.”
Nets Guard Vince Carter
On the game:
“We still have a job to do. We still have to come to play and get wins regardless of who is here. We are trying to get back in the mix of things, so we have to take care of business. We wanted to defend for 48 minutes and limit them to one shot. We wanted to get easy baskets too. I was just focused on playing tonight and doing whatever I could do to help us win. Right now we are just trying to win games and make things a little better and brighter around here. I am just trying to do my part and hopefully everyone else will follow. Hopefully we can just get back to playing ball.”
