January 19, 2008 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 84 | New York Knicks - 88
HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the game:
“I don’t think we had as much energy tonight as we had last night, especially in the second half. I thought we were very lethargic. We made some fatigue turnovers in the fourth quarter. That really hurt us. [We made] seven turnovers in the fourth quarter. Getting right down to the crux of the game and the outcome, we had four or five shots that you have to make. We had about three or four shots [in the end] that were good shots but they just did not go down.”
On the losing streak:
“It is not for the lack of want. We talked about it [before the game]. You don’t want to talk about it too much because you don’t want to make it any worse than it is. We need an energy shift. We don’t like it, it is there, and it is dragging us down. We just need to find another place. Maybe we should hang some pictures of that trophy [Larry O’Brien trophy] somewhere so we can remember what it felt like to be in that moment. We have to change the energy somehow.”
On the play of Nate Robinson:
“He really played well tonight. He has a lot of energy and is very, very quick. He made some big plays for them [New York Knicks] tonight.”
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the game:
“This is a game full of runs, just like we had a run to get up ten, they had a run to come back and get it down.”
“It was an off night for me today. Physically I was not in it. I tried to push my way through it. It was one of those days when it did not come back.”
On the fourth quarter:
“They played pretty good defense, but we got good shots. We just missed them. Coming down the stretch I had a lot of good looks and I missed them. They did do a good job of being active defensively, but we still got the looks we wanted.”
HEAT Center Shaquille O' Neal
On the game:
“We just have to stay with it. We’ve been real close in a lot of these games but most of the time we just shoot ourselves in the foot with silly mistakes. We just can’t close them out. We make a lot of silly turnovers and silly defensive mistakes. We are close. I feel like we just need to get over the hump.”
“We just have to pick it up. We know what our problem areas are. We just haven’t been able to get over those yet.”
“We missed a lot of shots. Chris Quinn hit a shot there at the end, but we just have to continue to take the high percentage shot.”
HEAT Forward Udonis Haslem
On the game:
“It sounds like a broken record. It’s never the offense. We just didn’t get stops in the fourth. It is not one particular thing.”
“When it gets into the fourth quarter we just try to stay positive.”
“It’s not tough to come to work. We are still blessed to be playing at the highest level of basketball right now. It’s not the end of the world. We are still very fortunate as human beings, but at the same time this is a big part of our lives and losing is not fun.”
“We can’t afford to be dragging and feeling sorry for ourselves.”
Knicks Head Coach Isiah Thomas
On the Game
“Coming the way we came with it, it wasn’t pretty but we were able to kind of grind and kind of hang and I thought when Jared (Jeffries) gave us a big lift defensively, his imprint on the game, probably doesn’t show up on the stat sheet but I thought his energy and the things he was able to do on the floor was great and David (Lee) was good, it was a good win for us today.”
“I thought Nate’s (Robinson) energy and shot making really kept us in the game and was able to come up with a couple loose balls, able to get breaks in transition and then Zach (Randolph) started rebounding the ball, he started making some shots. Then Nate (Robinson) and Jamal (Crawford) kind of really finished the game off for us.”
“I thought our pressure was good but I thought they missed their shots too. They had a couple of good looks they did knock down, but for the most part I thought our defensive pressure and our quickness was a factor out there also.”
“I just thought the energy of our team, you know the four game in five nights, I was just trying to get a unit out there that had a little spark and when I found him I just went right with him.”
On the ball in Wade’s hands in the end of the game:
“You always hold your breath when he (Dwyane Wade) gets the basketball and we had a foul at that point in time but, with Wade, he was so clever and when he went up to shoot the basket, you was definitely holding your breath.”
Knicks Guard Jamal Crawford
On the game:
“Tonight was definitely a good test. To play four in five nights is tough for any team. The good team takes the steps to win those four or five nights, and we’re not necessarily there yet, but we’re taking the steps to get there.”
“Our offense will come and go, especially playing four in five nights. Legs are tired, you’re tired, you’re mentally trying to push through it. But if you can play defense, you give yourself a chance to win. I thought we had some big plays, some big steals, and it was a good game for us.”
Knicks Forward Zach Randolph
On the game:
“We just played hard and we played the whole game. Miami is going up and down and so are we, so we just went out there to compete.”
“We rebounded really well. We got defensive stops toward the end. That’s what we need to do to win these games – we need to come out like that on Monday and play the same way.”
On the upcoming Celtics game:
“The Celtics beat us pretty bad last time on national TV, and guys weren’t playing well. I think we’re a better team than we were when we played them last time. We’re playing better together. We’re moving the ball. All we need to do is get stops.”
Knicks Forward David Lee
On the game:
“I just wanted to go all out tonight. It was a big game for us. After we ran into a hot team last night, this was a big game on the road. I think this was a huge momentum game for us before we go back home against Boston. We’ve built up some really good things for the last week-and-a-half or two weeks, but tonight was a huge test for us. I think we passed that test, we had a great second half and I’m just happy to be a part of this win.”
On Dwyane Wade:
“I knew I was at a slight disadvantage weight and height-wise. I did my best to work angles and not let him get in too deep. And the times that he did, I just tried to release and get around. I took a couple of elbows for it, and I did what I could. He’s a great player, obviously. One of the best ever.”
