HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the Game:
“You can’t sustain a game because defensively you get frustrated that you can’t score or you might go through a period of time when they shoot 70% in the 4th quarter and they get 17 second chance points. We need to come up with consistent stops. They went to their zone that stymied us for about three to four minutes and during that time is when they really opened up their lead.”
“It happens to everybody [getting frustrated]. It happens to a lot of teams. I think when you are playing well you are playing well for 30-something minutes and then you go through a period of time where you are tested, and even though these are veteran guys, you do have some young guys out there.”
“We have a lot of adversity. I still go back to all those close games at the beginning of the year and even the three overtime games; we just still haven’t been able to sustain an effort hard enough or long enough defensively to make the stops we need. Tonight we needed four, five, or six stops when we weren’t hitting anything and we weren’t getting them.”
On Dwyane Wade:
“He’s really sore, he really is. He’s doing everything he can do. The first half tonight, he pretty much played the playmaker and then he was saving it for the end. If we weren’t down so far then he probably would have had enough to pull us out but then we got down 10, 12, 14 points for a while.”
On going back to the drawing board:
“I think I’m drawing it right now as we speak. If you take a look at the lineups on the court right now it’s more of who isn’t on the court. I think we’re trying to change our entire game over the last three or four games to the perimeter game without Shaquille [O’Neal] or Alonzo [Mourning]. I think for the most part we have done a good job but we just haven’t sustained.”
HEAT Guard Ricky Davis
On the game:
“We played so good in the first half and then come out (in the second half) and didn’t play the same game we played in the first half.”
“It can’t get any worse. This is about the bottom of the map. You’ve just got to stay positive and just keep working and try to get out of it.”
“I think we have a better record on the road than we do at home. Guys just need to stay focused on what we need to do.”
“We didn’t execute or get stops.”
“It has been the little things that don’t get done that hurts us in the long run.”
“I’ve been through this situation before. We have to stay together and overcome.”
HEAT Guard Daequan Cook
On the game:
“Defense, no question, that is the biggest part of our game. We are kind of down right now. On the offensive end we have been executing pretty well, but it is tough for us down the stretch to get stops when we need them the most.”
“It is really important right now to get a lot more stops and be prepared for these road games that lie ahead.”
On Coach Riley:
“It’s very odd, Coach Riley emphasized defense so much. We can only learn from this to get better, it’s a new year. Hopefully everybody is coming in with a new attitude to get better and play a lot better.”
HEAT Forward Udonis Haslem
On the game:
“Right now the whole situation is not a situation that we are proud of. It’s not just this game. It’s a lot of games that we are not proud of the way we played. It’s difficult. We are grown men here. If this is the worst thing that happens to us, then it’s probably going to be a good life for us. We just need to keep fighting.”
“We can’t guard ourselves right now. That’s the problem. It’s not offense. We cannot guard nobody, hands down we cannot guard nobody. Until we are able to guard, there will continue to be offensive rebounds. We will continue to have point guards blocking out five men. Until we are able to play defense, this is what it is going to be like. I don’t know what the situation is or what the reason is. I know that that is what the problem is, the defense. We are so close but yet still so far away. We will probably have to end up playing zone the whole game because we cannot guard anyone one-on-one. If Coach (Pat Riley) comes out and plays zone the whole game, next game, I wouldn’t be surprised. I’m not pointing the finger at any one person, I’m saying ‘we’ collectively haven’t guarded anybody.”
“I’m going to play hard no matter what. That’s my job. I’m not going to let the record reflect how I’m going to go out and compete.”
“We just have to make plays. We started out pretty well, and kind of cooled down in the second half. People tried to take the ball out of our best player’s hands and all the other guys have to step up.”
“I don’t think anybody is giving up. We will keep fighting. It’s not like the eighth place team in the East is 28 games ahead of us. We still have a chance.”
Bucks
Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak
On the Game:
“We had a tremendous practice yesterday afternoon. You don’t get anything in the win column for it, but we went into it hard-nose. Before, we had too much complacency. I think that we have enough depth in our bench that if a guy is taking the night off, we have enough guys that can come in. To have a fighting chance in this league, you have to have much more intensity than what we have been playing with.”
“I liked the energy that the guys on the floor had. They really defended and scrapped. We got a little sped up. We turned the ball over seven times in the first quarter. In the NBA it basically averages out to a point a possession. Every time you have the ball you are going to score a point. For us, to have the number of turnovers we had, we basically sucked the life out of us offensively because we didn’t get a shot at the basket. That is what got us in the first half and stopped our motor from running the way it should have been. And at the end of the game, we got a little ‘loosey-goosy’` with the ball and it ended up for a couple of baskets for them. It’s not rocket science, we just have to be a little more solid and treat the ball like a piece of gold.”
“It was a little different playing with the lead. It was uncharted territory for us. We just talked about the consistency of our effort. If we find that, we will find ourselves in a more favorable position down the stretch of games instead of being a little deflated.”
Bucks Forward Charlie Villanueva
On the game:
“I have to give Miami a lot of credit for fighting back, but we kept our composure, made our free throws and got a win today.”
“It feels good to get our first win in the new year. We’ve had a bad taste in our mouths for a long time. We lost four games in a row and we were just struggling. This is a good way to start off the year.”
Bucks Center Andrew Bogut
On the game:
“In the second half, we made some adjustments and we played very well. I had a couple of plays early. We started to move the ball and Mo (Williams) found me a couple of times and Mike (Redd) found me a couple of times.”
On the Bucks’ fourth quarter run:
“We just did a great job. We came out and got that lead. All the guys were making shots. Everyone was important in this game. Even the guys on the bench who didn’t play were vocal today, which is very important.”
“Whenever you get a win, especially a tough one like this, I think it improves your confidence. We’re going home now, and we’ve got a lot of home games after this coming up. We’ve got Washington this week, so hopefully we can get back up for that.”
Bucks Guard Royal Ivey
On the game:
“We’ve got a lot of losses in the loss column, but we came in here and got a tough road win. We knew that Miami is hurt, but this is the NBA – everybody can come out and play. Chris Quinn played well, and they fought us to the end.”
“We were down in the first half and we didn’t play so well in the first half, but in the second half we turned it up, turned up our pressure, turned up our intensity, hit some big buckets and we came out with the victory. It’s a great road win. In the NBA, it’s hard to get a road win. We’ve just got to take it one game at a time and build on it.”
