December 20, 2007 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 103 | New Jersey Nets - 107
HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the game:
“Not from a lack of wanting the win. That’s for sure. We do get some bad bounces, but the bad bounces you have to pursue, and you have to make them happen for yourself. It’s just a tough, tough, tough loss. Two overtime games and I thought we played hard. Making mistakes a little bit, in coverages sometimes we overextend when we don’t need to overextend at the end, and that’s born out of just desperation; Guys wanting to win and trying to stop people. We put ourselves a little bit at risk, defensively, by some of the things we do, by reaching and trying to strip in the penalty, and it cost us. It cost us.”
“I’ve learned over the years that it doesn’t make any difference what happens, so you try to deal with it. Our guys are dealing with it real well, by coming back after last night, and playing their ass off, and not winning, and it is frustrating in another overtime game.”
“We get good shots, we don’t make them. They get a prayer at the end of the shot clock, and Vince (Carter) nails it. That’s what he does, but we go in transition and for some reason we try to early double team in transition, and they throw the lob to (Josh) Boone, which to me is really a poor decision at that time. Those are the mistakes that we make, that we have to correct.”
On Dwyane Wade:
“Oh he is back and he is still not right. Obviously he is a great, great player. We ask him to do a lot. We are sort of in dire straits, and he takes a lot of it on his shoulders. We are getting contributions from other guys too, but your great players are stepping up when they are needed the most. He is completely and probably beyond frustrated, because of what he is trying to accomplish from that standpoint.
HEAT Forward Udonis Haslem
On the team:
“In my five years in the league I have seen bad teams and this is not a bad team. There is still hope and we just have to continue and go out and play. It’s tough to look at them (HEAT’s number of losses) but when you look at the standings in the East, there are only a few teams over .500. So we still have a chance.”
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the game:
“You have to keep believing and keep playing until you can’t play no more. You can’t really feel good about this, but you can feel good about your progression. We just need to continue to find out how to get a win. Losing Alonzo (Mourning) really hurt. He’s a force for us on defense and our emotional leader on defense, so that really hurt. We have to try to make the timely stops and continue to have effort. It was the timely stops that made us win a championship and what made this program successful.”
“I feel good. I’m all the way back (from his injury). My body is feeling good. I’m there.”
On the loss of Alonzo Mourning:
“It means more off the court for us. He’s that emotional leader. He brings an attitude. We just want him to get healthy. It’s not the way he wants to end his career but like he said, he didn’t want to end it on a stretcher.”
HEAT Guard Chris Quinn
On his ankle injury:
“I was going through the lane and stepped on someone’s foot and turned my ankle. Nothing too serious. It feels all right. I’ve been icing it already and will get back as soon as I can.”
“It’s just a mild sprain. I’ll be back as soon as I can. We’ll see how it feels when I wake up in the morning.”
On the team:
“There are opportunities for guys to step up and that’s what needs to be done, regardless of who it is. We need to get better and get wins. The bottom line is that we are not getting wins. We lost a couple tough ones, especially these last two. Everyone wants to win and is playing hard out there. Execution could definitely be better at times.”
HEAT Forward Dorell Wright
On the game:
“We just have to find a way (to win). I know it’s tough right now and we just need to find ways sooner or later. We are getting better and better every game, we just need better results.”
“We are going to keep working on it in practice.”
On losing Alonzo Mourning:
“Zo was a vocal leader in the locker room and his presence on the court, changing shots and blocking shots like he does. We are really going to miss Zo. We just need to find a way to step up.”
Nets Head Coach Lawrence Frank
On the game;
“We basically played at a basic set, which is read and react. We were able to find a rhythm. Defensively I think we were 8-of-11 in terms of possession execution wise. The game for us, Jason (Kidd) against (Dwyane) Wade. Wade was going where he wanted to, great rhythm and had 31 like that. Jason (Kidd) helped change the game by doing his work early then our Bigs did a better job of getting the ball out of his (Dwyane Wade) hands, trying to make him more of a passer. We had great contributions from everyone. Malik (Allen) obviously had a huge game off the bench, Vince (Carter) and Richard (Jefferson) played really good, Josh (Boone) had a great second half, there were contributions from everyone.”
On the end of the Game:
“Vince had that huge three that put us up two, Haslem hits that jumper in the end of the game. Instead of playing the victim we sucked it up. It was good, it is a step, we have been here before, we have taken steps during times this season, the key is to try and build on the good things we are doing. Just the competitiveness is a positive and we will continue to get better on both ends.”
“There were a lot of ends and flows in that game. When your down, especially on the road, you have to get stops. We were in that position a couple nights ago where we were down and we never put together enough stops. It’s good that tonight we were able to find a way.”
NetsForward Richard Jefferson
On Dwyane Wade:
“Dwyane Wade was unbelievable tonight. To put up that kind of performance on a back-to-back overtime game is unbelievable. He was impressive tonight.”
“We got big shots from people. We had a good five minute stretch from everybody. Everybody on the follow made a big play at some point during the game. That is what you’re going to need. Every good team in this league has four or five guys on the floor making big plays every time down the court. You need everyone to contribute. You can’t be out there two-on-five or four-on-five, you need everyone on the court contributing in some way and doing there part.”
Nets Guard Vince Carter
On the three at the end of regulation:
“I told Richard Jefferson that if he needed help to throw it up. I told him that I would be open and I would make the shot. I didn’t know how I was going to take the shot. I tried to show the ball and the defender didn’t go for it and he just kept coming. I just tried to shoot it over him and focus on the shot. It was a rhythm shot and we were just trying to get a basket. It was just one of those where I was just locked in and I was ready for it. I was just looking to take a good shot if it was there. I didn’t want to hesitate because who knows what would have happened.”
On the game:
“It was a close game. We felt that it was back and forth and we were just playing with a lot of confidence regardless of the fact. We wanted to pick up our intensity and we were just trying to pull it out. There is a level of frustration in knowing that we are a better team than our record indicates. We have to build somewhere and we just have to keep playing. Hopefully tonight is a building block for our team.”
