April 24st, 2007 | United Arena| Miami HEAT - 89 | Chicago Bulls- 107
HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the game:
We had a bad 3rd quarter. It was the same thing the other night. They had a run in the 3rd quarter and we were down 10 or 12 points. Fighting from behind in this building is very difficult. They did not shoot under 50% in any quarter. They were on fire tonight. They were actually great tonight.
Bulls seem to match up well against your team:
This game can change very quickly. We found that out last year. Just when you think it is at the worst you find it is just the beginning. We almost stole one the other night. They shot the ball well. They have great shooters and good movement. They showed good energy and they were making their shots. We have to do a better job of affecting their jump shooting game.
Job on Deng in the 1st half:
He is an opportunistic scorer. He just moves and moves and he is a great athlete. He makes that mid-range outside shot. We have to stop giving him air space.
Deng struggled during the season:
I don't know that he struggled. 2 of those games were blow outs so I don't know how much he was affected by that. We don't look at the regular season. Right now he is highly motivated and we have to find a way to contain that.
You looked a step slow on defense:
In the 1st quarter we had 9 turnovers. You can not make those kinds of mistakes against any team. There has to be a sustaining commitment to effort. They are winning the effort battle.
Last year you were down 2-0 in the Finals:
Then we were in playoff condition. We are not there yet after 2 games. I think one of the best things that happened for the Bulls was that they lost in New Jersey and that pissed them off. Their effort is born out of that kind of adversity. We have to find a way to mitigate their effort.
On their ball movement:
They are a jump shooting team and a movement team. They are used to it and like to play that was. It is a simple game for them after playing that way for 82 games. When they move the ball like that everyone is live. They don't run a play for Hinrich or Gordon. It is movement, driving and kicks. It is very comfortable for them. It is a 7 game series. We have to go home and win 2 games. If we don't correct some things it will be difficult for us to win at home.
HEAT Forward Antoine Walker
On Luol Deng:
"Besides him getting his hands on loose balls, and getting around the basket and putting it back- he's been making 17 and 18 foot jump shots with great consistency. He shot the ball well all season but I don't think he shot it this well. He got off to a bad start, but he stayed with it. He's got the green light. He's killing us right now and we've got to find a way to stop him."
On the Bulls' emotion:
"It doesn't bother me. We knew coming into this series that if they had home court advantage that they'll come in confident that they could beat us in a 7 game series. They did what they're supposed to do, they held serve. Obviously we came here to get a win, but now the pressure is on us to protect our home court. We've been down 2-0 before. On Friday night it's going to be about who wants it more. It's going to take a collective effort but we have to do a better job in a lot of different categories. We can't let them shoot 55% and they outrebounded us, too. We're a veteran team. We've got a lot of veteran guys who know how to play this game and understand what's at stake. Nobody said it was going to be easy. Coming in, we knew it was going to be difficult. They have the confidence to think that they could beat us and until we stop that it's going to be a tough series."
HEAT Forward/Guard Jason Kapono
On the Bulls' play:
"They were just on fire. They made a lot of shots and we didn't. We had them by 2 at one point. But once they got in the rhythm, that was it. I know how it feels to do that. The basket just looks big for everything you shoot at it."
What do they need to do?
"We just need to come out better after halftime. That 3rd quarter came out slow, we just need to focus on that next game. They did their job here. They took care of their business and home court. Now we have to do the same at our place."
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the Bulls' play:
"They were on fire. They came out in the 2nd half and just put in all that they put up. They came out focused and took the game over. Yes, we got it down to 7, but then they made a run. They we did again, but they just continued to make their shots."
What can they do?
"We'll go back and look at the film. They just did what they were supposed to and won their 2 at home. Their game plan is to get it out and run when we miss. That works when the guys get out in the open court and then hit those jump shots. If you miss them, it's a different game. We just need to make more of our shots. When the ball goes in, we don't turn the ball over and allow them to get out and run."
On the Bulls' play:
"This is one of the best home teams in the league. We knew that and hoped to steal one here. We didn't get one, but we're still confiddent about our position."
On Deng's play:
"He was just in a comfort zone. We have been giving him too much space and letting him get his jump shot off. He's very hard to defend because at 6'9", his length allows him to get up over most people."
Chicago Bulls Head Coach Scott Skiles
The difference is the ball movement and hitting shots:
We went through some stretches were we stood around. We have a couple guys to who can create their own shots, but we are much better when we get the ball moving. We were able to pull away a little bit and get a cushion. We don't have a choice with our ball movement game. That is the way we are contructed and the way our guys like to play. We are not at the stage yet were we can get away from that game. If they make the effort to stop our movement we have to be more determined.
Are you happy with the pace of the game:
Our game is trying to force turnovers and get out on the break and look for the early jumper if we can. We were very active tonight. Our defense was better than average.
Their emphasis on Luol in the 1st half:
I don't know if it was anything that they were doing. Luol settled down in the 4th quarter and hit some huge shots. He seemed to be setting his feet better and hitting his shot late. He was aggressive and did not let his early 0-6 shooting throw him off. He did not hesitate with his medium range jumper. His shot is more than good.
On Kirk's foul trouble:
I don't agree with the premise that the calls against him will get worse in Miami. I don't want anything that the refs do to be an excuse for our guys.
Still young team, concerned about overconfidence with 2-0 lead;
We were up 2-0 two years ago and lost 4 straight to Washington. We will look at tape and be as ready as we can be. Overconfidence is not a problem.
On Ben Gordon's game:
He is rebounding well. We need to get those odd rebounds. Wallace and O'Neal are fighting for rebounds and we need our guards to pick those up. He was aggressive early and the basket looked very big to him.
Bulls Guard Ben Gordon
On the game:
"The last thing we want to do is relax. We want to play like we're down 2-0. I think it's very import to approach the next game like it's the first game of the series. We have to come out with the same intensity."
On the 3rd quarter:
"I just wanted to be aggressive. We didn't have a great lead so I wanted to come out and set the tone. My teammates did a good job of finding me for some open 3's. We were able to build up a little bit of a lead and I think that helped us."
On perimeter match-ups:
"We just have to keep working on the mis-matches and try to keep working with what the defense gives us."
On Miami:
"They're a team that can win 4 in a row. They did it last year against a great team. We definitely can't get complacent and relax. Like I said before, we have to continue to play real hard."
On the Bulls' ball movement:
"I think all season we've been doing real good moving the ball. I think in the playoffs we've been even sharper because we have no choice. that's the only way you can attack this team. You have to have crisp ball movement and hit the open man."
Bulls Forward/Guard Luol Deng
On the game:
"It felt like a long game. At the end when I was waiving my hand, I felt a little bit more comfortable with the situation."
We've got to be mature enough about the situation to understand that the series is far from over. We can't relax. We've got to keep being aggressive."
On adjustments he expects to see:
"We're not going to make any adjustments. With the way we're playing, when they attack Ben (Gordon) with the double team, it leaves someone open. It's not like I'm coming off screens to face a double team or anything like that. We've just got to keep moving the ball and finding the open guy. when they double team Ben, that's actually better for us because we'll find the open man."
On the 4th quarter:
"On thing is that they went with a small line-up. I felt like when they did that, the game kind of sped up. We did a good job pushing the ball. When we faced small line-ups this year, we've done an effective job pushing the ball."
On keeping their emotions in check:
"I think we're doing a better job communicating as a team than we ever have before. When the other team makes a run, we try to talk and help out each other."
On their potential for over-confidence:
"I guess I'm not going to worry so much about that. We have to find a way to win."
Bulls Center Chris Duhon
On the game:
"We did a great job tonight. Everybody contributed in their own way. Ben (Gordon)and Lu were spectacular for us. But think our overall defense was outstanding."
On answering Miami's runs:
"That's a sign of maturity on our part. We had problems with that earlier in the year when we had leads. The team would make a run and we would put our heads down. Tonight we just took a step back, took a deep breath and went down and got a good good, then rallied with defense."
On comparing this year's team to last year's team:
"I think we're being a little more consistent. We're being more consistent on figuring out what's working for us and figuring how to use that. At the same time, we're bringing the energy level, taking care of the ball and playing really smart basketball right now."
On blocking out Shaq:
"It was tough! I didn't think I was going to get that rebound. I was just trying to knock it out and let someone else get it. I tried backing him up, but it was like backing up into a wall. He didn't move a bit."
