HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On the Game:
“We played a lot harder than we did last night. We also played a lot better defensively. Offensively, I am concerned about the sloppiness. I think we have to work through some of that; there are just too many turnovers. It is an ongoing process until next week.”
“I was trying to find room for Dwyane [Wade] at both the two and the one. Jason [Kapono] and Eddie [Jones] are our best shooters. They get off their shots quicker with him out there.”
“Antoine [Walker] played very well tonight. Not having Udonis [Haslem], who is one of our best screeners, is [difficult]. Dwyane really likes playing with him. They have a real connection.”
On the play of Dwyane Wade:
“He needs to get into game shape. We have all watched him play. We know how he plays when he is at the top of his game and in great condition. He is explosive, quick, and he sees the floor. He is not even close to that now. That is what is frustrating him a little bit. Plays that he was making routinely [he is not]. It will come. He needs that kind of competition. He was pretty good for us last year, and we are going to stick with it.”
“This is a tough injury to come back from. In the fourth quarter, he made a lot of plays, he missed some easy jumpers that he normally makes, but it will come.”
HEAT Forward Antoine Walker
On winning the division title:
“This year has been up and down. We have been struggling all year with the injuries. To battle back from six games under .500, to come back and win the division is a tremendous confidence boost for everybody. Obviously our hopes and goals are to win another title.”
On the game:
“We just needed to get back to playing good basketball. We got Dwyane (Wade) coming back and we have to work his kinks out. Having Udonis (Haslem) and Shaq (Shaquille O’Neal) out doesn’t help the process when you’re getting ready for the playoffs. Hopefully, for the last two games we will have everybody back and we can get a little rhythm.”
HEAT Center Michael Doleac
On the team’s mindset going into the playoffs:
“I think we have a tendency, as a team, to let down every now and then. That happened last year during our playoff run and it happened this year during the regular season. I think it’s one of the flaws of our team. It’s something that we have to address and guard against. We are one of the best teams in the league, if we come out and play hard. We are really tough to beat.”
On having Dwyane Wade back:
“His timing is not 100 percent back. I think he’s still testing the shoulder a little bit. He looks good. He’s being aggressive and he’s getting more confidence with every play he’s out there. He definitely sucks everyone in (defenders) and is able to kick out to guys standing there wide open. It’s a lot easier to make shots when you’re wide open.”
On winning the division title:
“The regular season has been up and down and to be able to salvage enough of it to get the division title, is something that is positive.”
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the game:
“Guys came in and hit big shots. Earl (Barron) hit a big shot for us and (Michael) Doleac played big minutes for us. We were still there in the thick of things, there in the fourth (quarter). They didn’t get discouraged at all.”
“I feel like my game is coming back. If I can just stop turning the ball over, I’ll be alright. It’s coming back. I’m glad I came back two games before so that I can get all the rust out and going into the playoffs ready. My conditioning felt great today. I’m just trying to get my legs under me as much as possible. Coach kept me in for a while and I wasn’t tired. I was able to make plays and get to the basket like I normally do.”
“I’m looking to play. This is the time for me to get my rhythm back.”
On winning the division title:
“It’s great. We accomplished one thing that a lot of teams come into the season want to accomplish. Our main objective is to get everyone healthy going into the playoffs.”
Wizards Head Coach Eddie Jordan
On the game:
“The team played very well. We played hard but we made some mistakes coming down the stretch. Miami is a good defensive team. It was tough for us to really execute coming down and getting things into the post. They got a couple charges, they denied us some post catches but for the most part our team played very well. Our bench played well. Just another game where we didn’t make the big stop or the big play at the other end to win.”
On the performance of his team without its two top scorers:
“We’re playing with a fairly new team and we’re building something from almost the foundation. We have to be patient with it, but at the same time we are correcting our mistakes. We are improving and hopefully, when the bright lights come on, we are a little bit sounder and a little bit more effective coming down the stretch. Along the way we want to win games obviously.”
“If it’s a measuring stick that we are ending games on the road, against good teams, then we are right there. If we continue to hold on and have faith in what we are trying to do then we’ll be fine when the playoffs roll around.”
Wizards Jarvis Hayes
On the game:
“This has been the story for the last three or four games. We play good for three and a half quarters. When it gets down to the last couple of minutes the other teams makes an extra play, gets a stop, and makes a key bucket down the stretch. They just made the plays and we didn’t.”
“We can’t get down. Of course we feel bad that we lost, but we have other games and then the playoffs.”
On Miami clinching the division:
“We wanted to win the division. But now that it is over with, we just have to end the season on a positive note going into the playoffs.”
Wizards Brendan Haywood
On the game:
“I don’t feel that we made plays down the stretch. But at the same time, you can’t take anything away from them. Anytime you lose you always have to show respect to your opponent.”
“Being close in games doesn’t count for much except horseshoes and hand grenades. We have been close in all of our games since our guys have been out. We just need to continue to work hard; continue to fight for each other and believe in what we do.”
On Miami clinching the division:
“No matter what kind of title it is you always want to be a part of it. To say you won the division title would have been something special. We can’t do it this year, but we still have to finish the season on a positive note. We don’t want to go into the playoffs on an 0-for-note. That is not the way you want to start things off.”
