HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On the Game:
“There were a lot of good things tonight. More than anything I really liked our energy and intensity. I really liked the first half especially; it was definitely the best half we’ve played all season. We came out with energy and we sustained it throughout the entire first half. It was a good step forward for us tonight. It’s more of what we need to do. We out rebounded them, kept our turnovers down and we shot free throws well. ”
“We talked about three things tonight; having a more consistent energy and intensity level, being more discipline in our offense and really staying together, which hasn’t been a problem on our team.”
“In the first half when we went to our bench we kept our intensity high. Even though we struggled to score a little bit, our defense stayed with it.”
“When your focus is on going out and playing hard and doing what it takes to win games, everything else falls into place. Do your job, play hard and things will come pretty easily.”
On Alonzo Mourning
“Nine blocks in 24 minutes, that’s pretty good. These young guys want to bring it to him and dunk on him as though it’s a badge of honor, instead of just taking simple shots.”
On Channing Frye:
“Channing Frye is a very good player. He’s been playing well, and I thought he played well tonight. His shooting is a little deceptive because he got some of those shots blocked, but the guy’s real good. They’ve got some really good rookies.”
HEAT Center Alonzo Mourning
On blooking shots:
“You just react to certain situations and you just have to take advantage of it. You know guys are going to still attack the rim. It’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.”
“I try to do the best I can to block the shot and keep the ball in play so we have an opportunity to get it and capitalize on it. I’ve been doing this ever since high school. I’m just fortunate enough to have had great coaches who have taught me the right way and obviously I have been blessed with the physical abilities to do it. I have a determination about me that regardless of the situation, I’m going after the ball. I have always been this way. I take pride in doing what I can to help my teammates.”
On young guys attempting to try to dunk on Alonzo Mourning:
“Either it’s going to be a great dunk or a great block. I think statistics work in my favor. I don’t like getting dunked on.”
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the game:
“Coach gave us a great speech to really get us going and a lot of the energy came from that.”
On shooting as many free throws as the Knicks:
“I was just trying to be aggressive. I went in with the intent to finish. The last two games I was worried about it too much so tonight I went in there and threw my body up in the air and got to the line. I need to continue to do that over the course of the road trip.”
On On the performance of Alonzo Mourning::
“I’m glad I’ve got him on my team. He had nine blocks and seven of them were amazing. He is the force behind our defense and we love having him back there. A lot of the blocks come to me so I have learned to go follow the block and get the rebound. A lot of teams know he’s going to block so they like to crash the glass. We have gotten better at getting those loose balls.”
HEAT James Posey
On the game:
“We just want to get good ball movement and take open shots with confidence. Tonight was one of those nights. I was open a lot and was able to hit some shots. Hopefully that can continue. We played well on both ends of the floor.”
“Guys are more focused and I think that is something that we have been lacking, even with the wins.”
New York Knicks Head Coach Larry Brown
On the Game:
“Dwyane (Wade) played great. He shot more free throws than our team and I don’t think he played but 37 minutes. Alonzo (Mourning) just controlled the inside on both ends. I thought they played perfect. At the beginning of the game, the first four or five plays, they just got to the front of the rim with nobody helping. That was a pretty good indicator of how it went. In the second quarter we get our first foul with 58 seconds to go in the quarter. I think they must have had 30-something points in the quarter, that’s got to tell you a little about what is going on. Most of our shots came off of one pass. I thought there was about eight or 10 of them that we had good looks. When you can’t guard anybody, you can’t shoot off the first pass. You got to pass up shots, you have to shorten the game. That is all we kept talking about. You have to make sure you execute better. We shot 18 free throws tonight, four or five of them were on technicals. I told them over and over again, it is one thing playing at home and wanting to get up and down the court, when you are on the road you really have to be more disciplined. You have to realize that if you get into foul trouble, you have to shorten the quarter. You have to limit their possessions. I thought everyone of their guys played great.”
Knicks Channing Frye
On the game:
“I wasn’t aggressive, especially on the defensive end. Today wasn’t a good day. We have tomorrow, we have practice, and we have a game on Wednesday. I have to stay optimistic and be mature about the situation, look at the film, and try to get better. Things happen during the course of the season. Tonight, we got outplayed. We know we have a long way to go. I think tonight, we defeated ourselves. They played a lot harder and executed a lot better.”
Knicks Antonio Davis
On the game:
“Hopefully we learned that every possession is important. Everything is important. When we come in after the game and talk about what we discussed pre-game and that we did not do it, hopefully we can learn that we have to pay attention and follow the game plan. I think if we did nothing but learn that, we will be all right. I think in this locker room, we know we have a lot of work to do and we need to keep working at it. We are not fooling anybody. We are not playing good defense. There are a lot of things that we are not doing. We need to make that list and start checking things off and not continuously add things to the list. There are so many things on that list now. Everybody needs to find ways to contribute and making that list smaller. We need to start looking in the mirror and figuring out what we need to do to make this team better.”
Knicks Nate Robinson
On the game:
“They were kicking our butts [in the first half]. We couldn’t let them come in and [beat] us like they did. We decided in the second half to do whatever it takes and play as hard as you can in the second half and just leave it out there. That is what we did, we tried our best. We fought and tried to work on things that we need to work on. It is a learning process.”
