April 28, 2005 | Continental Airlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 108 | New Jersey Nets - 105
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On the game:
"It was obviously a hard fought battle by two teams. I know that's an easy thing to say as the winning coach, but nobody deserves to lose this game. I think none of the players out there deserve to lose that game. That was an incredible battle. With the minutes played by some of these guys, Carter 55, Kidd 54, Wade 50, Krstic 49 we got 47 and 45, these guys went to battle out there for a long long time today. On either end, they made mistakes and missed some shots. Both of us just kept battling. I am extremely happy with all the stakes and everything, to come out of here with a win."
On Carter's overtime shot:
"I thought it was coming off. We had so many of those go in that I thought we were doomed. But, when that went down I thought okay we'll just play another five minutes. I told our guys late in regulation; the game was so long, I don't know exactly when I said it, that this was great and that we need this. We need to be in games like this. If we want to keep on dancing we have to win games like this. When you come out on top you can obviously look back and say that."
HEAT Forward/Guard Eddie Jones
On the game:
"Tonight everybody just stepped in and when they were called upon to make shots, they made shots. When they were called upon to make defensive plays, they made defensive plays. Everybody came into tonight feeling good about themselves. I was upset about the missed free-throws. I was upset on my own because I am an 80 percent free-throw shooter. You go up there and you clank two of them and it's tough. We withstood it and kept fighting back and finally down the stretch we started making them and we came away with the win."
On missed free-throws:
"That's were you want to miss them if you are going to miss a shot, straight at the rim and back rim. It happens. I just have to continue to take the same shot. We knew coming in it was going to be a tough game and we were going to get their best. I believe they gave us that. It was just a matter of us sticking with our defense and hopefully controlling ourselves on their press. It was hard to press when we were turning the ball over and getting transiton points.
HEAT Center Shaquille O’Neal
On physical game:
"It's not the physical. I'm trying to get over the little ailments I have. I have a group of guys with me that are not going to give up. We played team ball. We just focused. We made a lot of silly mistakes that put us in a lot of predicaments, but we picked it up and we didn't crack under pressure and we continued to win."
On team's effort:
"We just got some stops and hit some shots. We just played good team ball. I have been saying all week, all month, it feels good to be on a good team. Right now I'm at about 40 percent but guys are stepping up for me. I stepped a little bit in the second half. It's going to get better for me and it's going to get better for us."
HEAT Forward Udonis Haslem
On the game:
"We do have our great players, Shaq and Wade, but everybody pulled it together tonight. I continue to go to the backboard all night, whether it was Dwyane driving or Shaq shooting. I just tried to continue to position ourselves to get rebounds."
On Keyon Dooling:
"He played great, coming off the bench he gave us a lot of energy. He came in tonight and knocked down his first four or five shots. When we needed some points, when our offense was suffering, he got it done."
New Jersey Nets Head Coach Lawrence Frank
On the game:
"We gave ourselves every opportunity to win the game. We came up a little short and we had every opportunity to win this game. We're down 3-0, the series is not over. We have to come back and put forth an effort. We need to find a way to regroup and get a win on Sunday."
On Richard Jefferson:
"Rich obviously had a great game. Our guys had put themselves in every position to win this game and unfortunately it's a shame we couldn't come out with a W tonight."
On fatigue late in the game:
"I think we had great looks and uncontested shots. Obviously, we have no excuses and those guys will agree."
Nets Guard/Forward Richard Jefferson
What it is going to take to win Game 4:
"Well, we were right there. It can't take too much more. A shot there, a free throw there, a call there, and it's a completely different game. If we play Sunday the way we played tonight, we are more than likely to get a victory."
On his health:
"I felt a little better, had my legs under me a little bit more. And that's a difference. I think we're a different team with me out on the court. But Miami still did a great job, even with me out there and playing well we still got the victory."
On the team:
"We are a very resilient group. We just have to come out in game four. It's a matter of breaking that seal and getting that first victory. And try and get back to Miami and keep putting that pressure on them."
On his stamina:
"I was no more winded than any other person that plays 54 minutes. I wasn't any more fatigued than J-Kidd or Vince Carter or Dwyane Wade or Eddie Jones. Any of those guys that played major minutes, we are all just as fatigued. So you don't make excuses whether you win or lose."
On his play:
"I'm always trying to do something, you know, whether it happens or not. You get into a rhythm being at home. This was my first home game, the crowd was into it, and my parents were in town. Those are all key ingredients to being successful. I just wanted to come off the bench and I knew that once things got going that good things would happen."
Nets Forward/Center Jason Collins
On the loss:
"Obviously, this was a tough loss. We just didn't get the result that we wanted. We have to come back with the same effort and play until the end of the clock on Sunday and we'll get a win."
On coming back from being down:
"The Red Sox did it, so the precedent is there. It's just a matter of us regrouping. We have a lot of guys tired in this locker room. We left everything out there on the court. But we'll regroup and get a win on Sunday."
On the game:
"It was a great game. There were plays being made on both sides of the court. Both teams were making plays and we just ran right out of steam a little bit towards the end."
On Miami's defense:
"Defensively, they tried to keep Shaq near the basket as much as possible. They tried to get up on VC and J-Kidd and basically force them to the basket and feed them right into Shaq. Curly was doing a great job of hitting jumpers and trying to pull Shaq away from the basket. We had a lot of guys step up and make plays. In the end, we just didn't get the result we wanted."
Nets Forward/Guard Vince Carter
On the shot at the end of regulation:
"I was thinking, just make up your mind. I missed the three earlier and I wanted another opportunity. I got lucky. I just tried to focus in and take a good shot and get all of my mechanics right. I was fortunate because it gave us new life and it gave us another opportunity."
On Jason, RJ and Vince playing together:
"We had a better ability to score with the three of us and make plays for each other. We were hoping that we could get production from us all tonight. And we got great production from the three of us, but we just needed three or four more points to win the game. It's a building block and I think going into Game four it is something we can build on now that we can put the ball in the basket. All we have to do is defend and just knock down open shots when we get them."
On the loss:
"The defeat hurt more than anything. It's tough when you play against the best team in your conference and take them to double overtime. And you have them on the road, you got to take advantage of that and win the game. You want to try to find a way to get a win because they didn't handle us like they did in the previous two games. Everybody took the initiative to fight, fight hard, play through good calls and bad calls. It was a great effort and a great game."
Nets Guard Jason Kidd
On the loss:
"We had a great opportunity. We just weren't able to shut the door. We had the lead going down the stretch and we should have never got to overtime. Vince drove and then found me for an open shot but unfortunately I missed it. We came out and gave it our all but unfortunately we came out on the short end."
On being down 3-0:
"The big thing is to look at game four and realize that you're not going to win three in a row unless you win one on the board. So we have to come out and give the same effort that we gave tonight. And we'll have a chance to compete against Miami."
On Richard Jefferson:
"We're just trying to work him back in. He's been out for three months and he came in tonight and played 45 minutes. So if we can get him stronger as the series goes on. And for my performance, I just try to help the big guys out by rebounding and finding open guys. I wish I just could have hit a couple more shots."
