April 8, 2005 | FedExForum | Miami HEAT - 81 | Detroit Pistons - 97

HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy

On the loss:
“I’m thankful we haven’t had too many of those. That was a (butt)-kicking from the beginning on both ends of the floor.”

“We didn’t play well offensively. Because we missed some shots early, we got away from our game. It was a very all around game. It was a very one-sided game. We’ve had a lot of team victories, this was a team loss. I didn’t do a good job and I don’t feel like anyone on the team did a good job.”

“You’ve got to give them credit. We didn’t play well even in spots. They just outplayed us. They played a great game, they were fabulous, we were awful.”

“It was the lack of execution. We just didn’t want to pass the ball tonight. When we did try to make plays, we couldn’t finish anything at the basket.”

“We haven’t had many nights that we didn’t bring it. It’s certainly not an excuse, they played the game great and we didn’t. It was definitely lopsided, but this is only the third game this year that we had our butts kicked. They got us good and deserve a lot of credit.”

HEAT Forward Udonis Haslem

On the loss:
“We haven’t had one of those games in a long time. But, this is the NBA. They made theirs and we didn’t make ours.”

“We didn’t get it done offensively or defensively. That’s not our character or our kind of basketball. We didn’t make shots on the inside or the outside. When that happens, it’s not good.”

HEAT Guard Damon Jones

On the loss:
“It’s that type of desperation they came out with. If we had came out like that, it would have been different. We’ve only had two games out of 77 like this. But, this game is over, you can’t go back and change it, we’ve just got to get ready for Sunday.”

HEAT Center Alonzo Mourning

On the loss:
“In the first quarter, we started the game horrendously then we had to play catch-up the whole game. It’s one game out of 82 but I feel it’s a significant game. You send a message that when you see us down the stretch, this is the way it’s gong to be.”

“We’ve got to put more of an effort from the beginning. You can’t dig a hole for yourself, especially when you’re shorthanded. The effort has to be there from the beginning.”

HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade

On the loss:
“We weren’t out of sync, we just didn’t start out well. We didn’t look like the team that we are. Some nights the shots are going to go in, and sometimes they aren’t.”

Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach Mike Fratello

On the game:
“It was a huge win for us tonight. We recognize the fact that they were missing the MVP of the league tonight (Shaquille O’Neal), just as San Antonio is missing Tim Duncan. I thought our execution in the first half was terrific. We worked hard on the glass and we defended well.”

“The tempo and direction of the game was set early by Jason Williams. He pushed the ball and hit some shots that led to 19 fast break points in the first half. He got the crowd into the game and got his teammates excited.”

“It was a huge game for Mike (Miller) tonight. Every time we needed someone to hit a shot, it seemed like he stepped up and hit one. I thought Dahntay (Jones) played very solid, and it shouldn’t go unnoticed. He was very active defensively, a very solid 16 minutes.”

On playing the Charlotte Bobcats:
“The team coming in here Sunday has beaten Miami twice this year. Their last two games have come down to the wire. If you look past them, you are in a lot of trouble. They knew they are a new team and that they were going to struggle this season. They are playing hard and are playing with a lot of pride.”

Grizzlies Guard Bonzi Wells

On the big win:
“Definitely one we had to have, especially with Shaq (O’Neal) out. But they still have a good team that is going to make some noise in the playoffs. *** We tried to jump on them and attack early. Tonight we had both groups play well. We got a good lead and we kept it. Every win counts. You have to keep playing hard and finish the season strong.”

On watching the playoff race:
“You look, but we can’t control those things. The only thing that we can control is in this locker room. We win and that takes care of everything else. We can’t let Charlotte (Bobcats) do what New Orleans (Hornets) did to us and play spoiler. We have to jump on them like tonight and put them away early.”

Grizzlies Forward Pau Gasol

On moving the ball:
“When we play unselfishly and move the ball then everyone is more energized and into the game and plays harder.”

On playing with big leads:
“We were able to stay focused and keep the lead. We try to say it is a 0-0 game and play another 24 minutes. We held up well and got the W the last two games.”

On Mike Miller’s big night:
“If they keep leaving him open, I’ll keep finding him. You can’t leave him open because he is one of the best shooters in the league. I guess they were trying to take the ball out of my hands and I’m more than happy to give up the ball to my teammates.
