March 15, 2005 | Madison Square Garden | Miami HEAT - 98 | New York Knicks - 96
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On the game:
“They out played us all night long. Our team has great confidence. They have a lot more in themselves than I do. I thought we did a good job of hanging in and fighting. We executed pretty well down the stretch. On the last play, Shaq (Shaquille O’Neal) got a great rotation on Kurt Thomas and I like Dwyane (Wade) at the end of games.”
On Dwyane Wade:
“He didn’t have one of his greater nights. He was frustrated with a couple of things, still you look at his numbers he had a high (field goal) percentage and had the play of the game.”
On play of role players:
“Damon’s (Jones) three-point shooting kept us in the game in the first half. It was the only reason we were in the game in the first half, because we were awful. Our bench guys who started the fourth quarter did a nice job of giving us a lift and getting us back into the game because they (New York) ended the third quarter kicking our butts.”
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On his game winning shot:
“I knew I was going to shoot at the buzzer. I just took whatever he (Trevor Ariza) gave me. He (Trevor Ariza) didn’t give me the drive so I took the jumper.”
On his turnover at the end:
“I pride myself at times like that. I am a person who makes the right play and at that time I didn’t. All we could do is get a stop and I knew the ball would be in my hands and I wanted it to be.”
HEAT Center Shaquille O'Neal
On Dwyane Wade:
“He is a great player. We always get the ball in his hands at the end of games. He really wasn’t in the flow during the game. We had a chance to win it and he won it for us. He had a turnover and he was pretty mad at himself. I told him to not worry about. I told him that we were going to get a stop and get the ball back. For a youngster he has a lot of poise. Too much poise.”
On tonight’s game:
“They shot the ball very well. We made a lot of mistakes, especially in the first half. It is not really about what they were doing but what we were not doing.”
New York Knicks Head Coach Herb Williams
On the game:
“We had the lead and we had control of the game. We let one get away. I don’t care who we’re playing when they come into the Garden, we have to win basketball games. We can’t let anyone off the hook. You have to come out and finish basketball games.”
On the rest of the season:
“We have to win some games on the road now. We can’t keep letting games slip away, because the season is slipping away. There are no moral victories in this league, either you win or you lose.”
Knicks Forward Malik Rose
On Kurt Thomas’ missed shot at the end:
“We will take that everyday of the week. He got a good look he just didn’t put it down.”
On guarding Shaquille O’Neal:
“It is painful at times. I look forward to it because Shaq is the best. He is the most dominant player in the NBA. I look forward to it because it makes me better.”
On tonight’s game:
“We competed against the best team in the East. We just didn’t get it done. As long as we compete we are going to get better. I can sleep well with that.”
Knicks Forward Trevor Ariza
On Dwyane Wade’s game winning shot:
“I played him straight up. He hit a tough shot to win the game. There is nothing more to say. I was just trying to stop him the best I can. He is an All-Star. He is a great player. He is going to hit shots like that.”
On bouncing back from this loss:
“All we can do is learn from it and get better. We have to focus in on the last 20 games or however many we have left. Let’s see what happens.”
Knicks Guard Jamal Crawford
On the game:
“It showed we can play with anybody, but we have to close the deal. We have a long way to go. We have to learn how to close out games.”
On Trevor Ariza’s defense on Dwyane Wade:
“He played great defense. He stopped Wade’s penetration and made him take a tough follow away. Unfortunately, it went in.”
