January 24, 2005 | Wachovia Center | Miami HEAT - 98 | Philadelphia 76ers - 106
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On the game:
"I thought we got to about the 8:00 mark in the fourth quarter in pretty good shape. (We) didn't have a lot of energy on the evening, but (we) were playing pretty well at that point and hung in the game. From there on, (we) just did not do a good job offensively down the stretch. They made some shots and that was the game. They got the cushion there. We've got to do a better job down the stretch, whether it's play-calling or personnel or whatever it is. We've got to do a better job."
"Obviously 16 turnovers is too many against them, and 27 fast break points, a lot of those coming off turnovers, are a major deal. Playing (the Sixers) in the half-court is hard enough, but in the open floor it's impossible. I thought in the first half (Allen) Iverson tuned us up. I thought we did a good job on him in the second half, but to his credit, that was probably one of the better games I've seen from him. He just didn't really force anything. We we're getting the ball out of his hands, and he was making plays. We did a pretty good job on him but he was very patient and got shots for other people. When he plays like that, that's going to be a difficult team to beat."
HEAT Guard Damon Jones
On the loss:
"I think that (the Sixers) did a good job of stopping what we had to do. We probably shouldn't have come back. We were hampered out there a little bit towards the end. We just tried to gut it out the best we could. It just didn't work well for us tonight. We didn't execute like we were capable of in the second half. That was the reason for the loss."
HEAT Guard/Forward Eddie Jones
On Allen Iverson's performance:
"When you have a guy like Allen Iverson on the floor, you're going to have a fast team. He's such a talent that he's going to create offense just by pushing the ball up the floor and finding his teammates. He did a great job finding (Kyle) Korver and (Samuel) Dalembert. He was just finding guys all the time."
"I think early on, he got his confidence going pretty well making his first three or four shots. From there, I think with a player like him, it's tough to control him from that point on. I think we did a good job in the second half of making him pass the ball, but his teammates stepped up and made shots."
Philadelphia 76ers Head Coach Jim O'Brien
On the game:
"Great, great effort by our whole team. A spectacular effort by Allen and a very, very strong defensive effort by our whole team, following a plan perfectly. A great win versus a great basketball team."
On Allen Iverson's contribution:
"Allen's a great scorer. I'd like to look more at the 11 assists to one turnover. He not only scores but he gets other people easy looks. We keep a stat called an adjusted assist, that means where you might make a pass to somebody who's wide open and they miss or get fouled, he probably had 20. If he turned it over that few a number I think we'll be difficult to beat. We're 9-1 when we have 13 or less turnovers. Clearly him having the basketball in his hands, I think he takes pride in getting his teammates open. He was spectacular tonight. Those starts are beyond belief."
On closing out the game:
" I thought it was a disciplined effort at both ends of the court for our team. We executed our offense; the open shots didn't always fall. I thought our focus at the defensive end. We know what we had to do from a planning standpoint. Our guys were just brilliant in executing it."
On whether or not he thought his team fed off of the Philadelphia Eagles in attendance:
"No. They're playing the Miami Heat, the best team in the east. I don't think they need to feed off of anybody."
On Samuel Dalembert's battling effort against Shaquille O'Neal:
"I thought he did a nice job of keeping his body away from Shaq. We talked before hand. You can't let Shaq get behind him and I thought Sammy really moved his feet. Not only that, but made sure Shaq had to run on defense because Sammy was beating him up court and it really forced Shaq to run. Our guys really did a nice job on setting random pick-and-rolls for Allen (Iverson), we had this on one of the keys to our game and we were 13-16. It really worked to getting him open in the first half."
On foul shooting:
" I forget what we are for the year in the league, but I know we're on the top ten. We get to the line a lot and we have been good solid foul shoots, especially down the stretch. Our guys have made big foul shots."
On Samuel Dalembert's understanding of what he wants out of him:
"It's coming. We communicate to our players on a regular basis."
On Samuel Dalembert's fourth quarter performance:
" He's so long and so important on the standpoint of blocking shots. Allen finds him constantly off of pick-and-roll situations. Sam's game will blossom as the years go along. He'll become a much more effective low post threat when he starts to exclusively to go to his right and his left hand for jump hooks, which he's very capable of doing. He just doesn't do it. He dunks well, but he needs to really have confidence to be able to shoot the short jumper and to be able to shoot jump hooks, which he can do with considerable length. We know we can defend, and the more he understands our system, the more complete of a player he'll become."
On fouling Shaquille O'Neal:
" We were going to foul him every chance he got the ball, with his feet in the paint we were fouling him everytime."
76ers Guard Allen Iverson
On the win:
"Hopefully we're just getting better. We struggle with games like this. A game's tight at the end, we usually can't catch a break, whether it's defensively or offensively at the end of the game, but tonight everything worked out well."
"With games like that, you have to get up for them. You're supposed to be able to get up for any game, but that game's kind of easy to get up for because they are at the top of the East. The whole thing coming in is just basically thinking about winning the game. That's all I thought about, just winning the basketball game. Not coming in here and playing against these guys and getting a moral victory or anything like that. Like I said, at this point in my career, all the moral victories are over with, as far as for me. So all I thought about was just trying to come out and do my part in getting the win. I think I played well, and my teammates played great. Samuel Dalembert gave us a tremendous lift. He's been playing great the last couple games, since he's been back. Everybody, for that matter. All the guys. Sniper (Kyle Korver) came off, started the game well, shooting the ball. I think Coach (O'Brien) and the coaching staff did a good job of making sure we (were) in spots that we needed to be in. It was just a good game for us all around, as far as the coaching staff and the players."
On the fans' enthusiasm for the Eagles in attendance:
"I don't know how we could feed off that. They weren't cheering for us. They were cheering for those guys, and well deserved. That's good. I kind of got goose bumps with the whole thing. Especially yesterday after them winning the game, and then coming in and seeing how the fans responded to them in here. With football, this has got to be the biggest city, as far as the fans, and how they feel about their team. I know it's a great feeling to be a part of that team, and just to know you got fans like that, that support them the way they do. I think all the people here are going to be right in Jacksonville when it's time for them to kick the ball off. So it was just great. It was something that, as a football player, playing Pop Warner, you always want to be a part of. That's the same thing with me. Just being able to try to get to the finals and win it. That's the ultimate goal."
On his foul shooting:
"I just tried to stay on the line. My teammates and my coaching staff always get on me, because I always fall away from the line, either right, left, or fall backwards. I just concentrated on staying on the line. I shot free throws well at the beginning of the season, then I kind of dropped off. I think me making free throws is going to be important for us, by me being a point guard and having the ball in my hand so much. It's going to help us in the long run. Plus they're just free shots. People think that free throws are easy because it's a free shot. But that's what makes it so hard, because you don't have (anybody) there contesting it. It's just you all by yourself. So I've just been concentrating a little bit more."
76ers Center Samuel Dalembert
On earning more playing time in the fourth quarter:
"It's been great. It makes me feel like Coach (O'Brien) has more confidence in me. I go out there and keep building on it and keep proving myself to my teammates and coaches that I can get the job done."
On the progression of his offensive game:
"Everything is coming along fine. Starting from the last game (at Orlando) into today, I've been coming along really fine, taking some jumpers when you are open and building your confidence up. You know that you can do it, it's just a matter of positioning yourself and getting it done. That comes with time."
On his strategy when defending Shaquille O'Neal:
"Just basically limit his touches inside and try to limit him to the point that he's out of the game. We tried to not let him touch the ball too much inside."
On his comfort level in the defensive schemes:
"It's been the same the last four years I've been here. It's a continual cycle, just be active, go out there and rebound and make my presence felt."
76ers Guard Aaron McKie
On limiting the turnovers:
"When we keep our turnovers down and get out on the break, we are a pretty decent team. When we deviate from that, that's when we start having our problems."
