December 8, 2004 | Bradley Center | Miami HEAT - 101 | Milwaukee Bucks - 96
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On the game:
“It was a great win because it is easy when things go smoothly as they did in Utah but tonight Shaq could never get into the flow of the game. Eighteen points in twenty-one minutes is not a bad flow for the way that game went, and we didn’t even get to play him. We couldn’t hit a shot in the first half. We missed at least six lay-ups in the game. It was just one of those games where we just had to hang in there and we made some timely plays and shots. I didn’t think that it was the best we’ve played, by any means, but that is the best I felt about our team the entire season. That was a very frustrating game and a hard one to win on the road the way things were going, and we hung in there and got it done.”
On the play of Dwyane Wade:
“Shaq didn’t get to play, so I think that Dwyane sees that he has to do it and at times he looks at the ‘I’ve got to do it’ as scoring and they are obviously going to bring a second guy at him all the time. With Dwyane, all you have to do is pull him over and tell him, ‘you’ve got to make plays’ and down the stretch he made great plays. He got the ball to Eddie (Jones) for the three. He got the ball to Udonis (Haslem) once. He made plays. He has to use his abilities in that way. It can’t be that he feels like he has to score. He has to take what is there and what the defense gives him. The great thing about him is that he is a learner and he is somebody that you can talk to.”
HEAT Guard Dwyane Wade
On the game:
“I think that tonight was a good game for us. We didn’t have our best game. We missed a lot of close shots and we played without Shaq for the majority of the game but we stuck with it. We stuck with a team that was knocking down shots and played with confidence so it was a great road win for us, and a great road trip for us. I was wondering why I was missing shots, but I saw other guys missing shots too, so I knew it wasn’t just me. I was just that kind of night. I had to dig down and make some plays at the end and that’s what it is all about. When the shots not falling you try to make other things happen and that is what I tried to do tonight.”
HEAT Forward Udonis Haslem
On the game:
“It was just one of those nights. I was fortunate to make a couple of jumpers. When you make jumpers it is easy to make passes because guys guard you.”
On going 12-12 from free throw line:
“I usually work on my free throws with (Bob) McAdoo. I usually lose, but if I was playing against him tonight I would have won.”
Milwaukee Bucks Head Coach Terry Porter
On not taking advantage of Shaq’s foul trouble:
“ We just couldn’t take advantage of it, we did a good job of getting him in foul trouble, but in the third quarter they were in the penalty for seven and a half/eight minutes of it, but we couldn’t take advantage of it. They shot 52% for the quarter and 92% from the line. We just couldn’t stop them without making a foul and then when they got to the free throw line, they were making them. That was disappointing because I thought our big guys did a good enough job on Shaq where we could have taken advantage, but offensively, we just couldn’t score at times, we had good opportunities."
On Kendall Gill:
“ Kendall has played extremely well for us since we got him. He knows how to play the game, a veteran who can play three spots, the one, two or three. We have guys banged up, based on our needs, he’s going to be able to fill that void for us. He has a great feel for the game. He has a pretty good grasp of our offense, so I have no problem trying to play him.”
On what he’ll talk to the team about:
“We talk about shot selection, we look at shot selection. If the majority are good, quality shots, and you just miss them you live with them, that’s just the way it works in this league for us. We try to see if we had some type of mismatches that we didn’t take advantage of, maybe in the post. We could try to post a guy up more, to try to have an inside presence. For the most part tonight, I thought we did a pretty good job of trying to go inside when we had advantages, we just didn’t execute as well as we needed to.”
Bucks Guard Michael Redd
On Miami:
“They made some big plays. They hit key threes late in the game, a loose ball here, a loose ball there. Udonis Haslem had a big night for them. They just played well tonight.”
On if it’s frustrating to lose these close games:
“Absolutely, it’s just a matter of us finishing off close games against these tough teams. All three games against Miami have been nail biters, we just haven’t had a chance to get over the edge, over the top.”
Bucks Guard Kendall Gill
On the Bucks’ offense:
“I think maybe with me thrown in the mix, they weren’t able to run some of the sets, but I pretty much know most of them. I just think that we had an off night. But this happens and I understand that most of the games have gone this way. Hopefully we can stop that soon.”
On himself:
“I’m probably in the best shape of my life. I got into the best shape of my life, but I wasn’t playing basketball at the time. I wasn’t tired at all.”
On his role with the team:
“I think I can come in and provide energy. I think this is Michael Redd and Desmond Mason’s team, they’re the young guys that are going to care this franchise for a long time. I just want to be here and help this team win. I think when Keith Van Horn gets back and the rest of the guys get back, I don’t think these games will slip away. I’ve been on teams like this before, where they’ve had a lot of injuries, once you get everyone back, it’s a totally different team.”
Bucks Forward/Center Zaza Pachulia
On playing Shaq:
“Last year I played against him. I’ve been watching him for a long time, so I kind of know what he likes to do. I tried my best, but it’s very tough to guard him. I tried to be smart, I’m not stronger than him, I’m not more experienced than him, I just tried to be smart against him.”
