March 26, 2004 | AmericanAirlines Arena | Miami HEAT - 119 | Dallas Mavericks - 118
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On the game:
“I will say we did one thing tonight…we hung in there. It was going the other way, and we just hung in there. My players just kept fighting, and did a great job. The last shot (by Rafer Alston) was incredible.”
“Sometimes your players bail you out, and they did that tonight, and I am very grateful.”
“We gave them 31 second-chance points. We are fourth in the league giving up the fewest second-chance points, and they just pounded us. But we hung in there, that is really all we did tonight. I can’t tell you why it did happen, or why it didn’t happen, but we got it done.”
On the crowd:
“From a fan’s perspective, I don’t know if there has ever been a better game played in this arena. This was absolutely a great game. It was a great game for the franchise.”
HEAT Guard Eddie Jones
On the game:
“I was so excited, I didn’t want to leave the court when they called the timeout. We never gave up against them. They went up 100-91 and we just kept fighting. That just shows how much character this team has. I’m so proud of everyone on this team.”
On the crowd:
“They’ve been with us for most of the season. I’m happy to have the arena bouncing and rocking the way it is.”
On the performance of Rafer Alston:
“Nobody gave him a shot over the last few years. He’s stepping up huge right now and showing people what he can do. I’m really happy for him.”
HEAT Forward Lamar Odom
On the game:
“It was so fun to play in that game and winning it was even better. I’ve never been in this kind of atmosphere so I’m at a loss for words right now. I’ve never seen anything like this.”
On whether he missed the second free throw on purpose:
“I wish I could, some things just happen.”
HEAT Forward Caron Butler
On whether it feels like a playoff atmosphere:
“I still saw four seats open. Come on out and enjoys this. We’re streaking. We’re finding each other well and we’re gelling. The best is yet to come.”
HEAT Guard Rafer Alston
On the final shot:
“That’s one of those shots you dream about as a little kid. I knew I was gunning for a three and I knew if I got it I was going to let it go.”
HEAT Center Brian Grant
On the game:
“That might have been, feeling wise, one of the best wins of my career. We’re a young team, and from the beginning we have based our team on our faith. Even though we started off slow, we believed in ourselves and it all came to a head right there in this game. We’re not stopping there.”
On the crowd:
“They were in there for us. Even when we were down by nine they were in there for us. The crowd is feeling it. That was a great win for the team and I’m so proud right now.”
Mavericks Head Coach Don Nelson
On the game:
“I don’t know what the breakdown was on the last play. I don’t know what happened. We should have had him better covered. But, I really liked the way we played. They seemed to get a lot of calls that we didn’t, and that seemed to hurt us. We fought through overtime and were in position to win at the end. Unfortunately they hit some awfully big shots and made some big plays and we end up losing the game. We played very well too. Give us some credit too.”
On Dirk Nowitzki fouling out:
“Losing Dirk certainly hurt us. I am not going to complain about calls. It was a hard fought game.”
On Rafer Alston:
“He found a hole in our zone. There must have been a breakdown at the end of the game. I had two rookies in the game, but I’m not blaming rookies. Somebody should of helped on Alston though.”
Mavericks Center Danny Fortson
On the game:
“The game is over. You can’t cry about the game now. Miami just kept hitting shots tonight. We just need to move past this game.”
On Lamar Odom’s missed free throw in Overtime:
“It skipped out of my hands and rolled off Antoine’s [Walker] back. I usually don’t miss those.”
Mavericks Forward Josh Howard
On the game:
“Miami came out and fought hard in overtime. There is nothing we can do about it now. We need to get ready for Orlando. We can’t let these last three games that we lost affect us. Orlando is going to be coming out playing hard and we need to be prepared.”
On the play of Rafer Alston:
“The guy was just making big shots and making big plays. There was nothing we could do about it when he kept hitting those shots.”
Mavericks Guard Marquis Daniels
On the game:
“They made big shots tonight. They play hard. They are a great team that plays really strong defense. They have the heart and the discipline to play hard. I just tried to stay assertive tonight. I was taking my open shots and they seemed to fall. We need to learn from this and keep going.”
