January 24, 2004 | Madison Square Garden | Miami HEAT - 85 | New York Knicks - 77
HEAT Head Coach Stan Van Gundy
On tonight's game:
"Other than turning the ball over a great deal, which I credit their defense, for the large part I thought we played really well. We have been battling and we finally get some reward. I thought the key to it all was all of the rest I gave guys. I gave Rafer (Alston) rest, Eddie Jones got seven, Lamar Odom got six and Caron (Butler) got eight (minutes) on a second night of a back-to-back. The fact that I rested them and had them out there fresh was the key."
On Caron Butler defending Keith Van Horn:
"He took the challenge and got into that battle. He did that the entire game. At the end, when we didn’t end up winning the jump ball, he made the sink and got the jump ball on (Michael) Doleac. That is the kind of energy we want to see from him."
On Rafer Alston:
"He had Jason Kidd and Stephon Marbury back-to-back. For a guy who has never played 1000 minutes in a season, to do the defensive job that he has done in two nights and to play all those minutes, 90 in two nights, that is fantastic."
HEAT Guard Rafer Alston
On Stephon Marbury:
"It was a total team effort. I don’t think anyone can stop him one-on-one. I just kept him in front of me and kept him from shooting uncontested jump shots. He struggled, but we both struggled out there."
On playing back-to-back games:
"That is what it is all about. There is no night off for me in this league from a guard standpoint. You just have to be prepared and get a lot of rest."
HEAT Forward Caron Butler
On tonight's game:
"A lot of people were talking about the Knicks, because of all of the action that has been going on as far as bringing in Isiah Thomas and Stephon Marbury. There wasn’t a lot of talk about us, but we were always in the thick of it all and kept playing hard and winning games. Now we are a team to be reckon with."
Knicks Center Michael Doleac
On tonight's game:
"They executed well down the stretch. We missed a couple of assignments. They played well tonight. They were hot early and got a little lead. I think we need to execute and play a little smarter. It will come with experience playing together."
Knicks Forward Kurt Thomas
On tonight's game:
"We are disappointed. We didn’t play well tonight. You've got to give Miami credit. They shot the ball extremely well. We had a lot of wide-open shots. We just didn’t knock them down. We struggled shooting the ball tonight."
Knicks Guard Stephon Marbury
On tonight's game:
"I just didn’t play well tonight. Tonight was just an off night for me. My timing was off. I was just off tonight. When I was suppose to shoot I was passing, when I was passing I was shooting."
On the bench play:
"Doleac (Michael Doleac) is playing so well for us right now. Frank (Williams) played great defense tonight. Othella (Harrington) got some big rebounds. Penny (Anfernee Hardaway) played phenomenal. Tonight was a tough night. We played six games in nine nights. We got four out of six. It is tough. This league is tough to play against great players every night."
On the Miami defense:
"They double teamed me, but guys were open. We didn’t knock down shots that we normally knock down for whatever reason. They capitalized on that. You really have to give credit to those guys."
Knicks Forward Keith Van Horn
On tonight's game:
"This is a tough loss for us. I don’t think it's magnified more based on who we play next. You take it one game at a time. You hate to lose ground like this. It is difficult to take this loss."
More on tonight's game:
"They did a good job defending but at the same time we got good looks. We just made some mental mistakes in crunch time that hurt us. We need to tighten up our mindset to win games. They really tried to rely on their bigs to get rebounds. The guards really got involved and tracked down some loose balls that really made a difference."
Knicks Guard/Forward Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway
On tonight's game:
"It was one of those games they wanted to hang around until the end and have a chance to steal the game and that is what they did. It was a game we should have won. Not taking anything away from Miami, it is a game we should have won."
On the bench play:
"We came in and played hard. We knew the starters needed some help. They started a little slow tonight."
Knicks Guard Allan Houston
On his knee:
"Tonight it was a situation where I felt like I was hurting us. I felt like I was playing on one leg out there. I felt like I was hurting us more on defense and when I did get open shots I couldn’t get any lift. Watching (from the bench) is really hard and frustrating. It is tough because you need time to get ready and better. I do feel like it is improving, I know it didn’t look like it tonight."
On watching from the bench:
"That is one of the most frustrating things. At times I felt like checking myself into the game and at times I felt like I was bailing out on the team. I don’t know how it looked out there, but I know how I felt."
More on his knee:
"Right now I am just trying to improve everyday. Very soon I just believe that it is going to be fine."
