HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On tonight's performance:
“It was an absolute explosion from the standpoint of getting frustrated again. They hit
everything in the first quarter and they really sort of sapped us. We had eight or nine
turnovers in the first quarter, and then it all started to come together. What we really
haven’t been doing over the past four or five games is playing hard enough. We haven’t been
physical. We haven’t been going to the boards and going for loose balls. That manifests
itself game after game. We weren’t playing together. All the shots we’ve been taking have
been a lot of individual stuff. Tonight we sort of hung in there and stayed with it. The
quick guys really got and out and ran. The zone just created fast break after fast break.
It was a great win for us.”
On Caron Butler's role as a leader:
“I think everybody on the team respects him. He’s a serious young guy that wants to be good.
He has a lot on his shoulders right now, and tonight was an absolute monster game for him.
(Wally) Szczerbiak was 10 for 13 last time we played in Minnesota, so I think Caron took that
personally. He responds to all that stuff.”
On Caron Butler being a Rookie of the Year candidate:
“There’s no doubt he’s a legitimate candidate. I think he should garner great attention and
respect. The reality is that we’re not on national television, and a lot of people don’t see
him. We’re not a team that politics like crazy. We have people working behind the scenes, and
his numbers are as good as anyone else’s. If he plays the last nine games like he’s playing
now, he does deserve to be voted Rookie of the Year.”
HEAT Forward/Center Brian Grant
On the game:
“After the first quarter I think a couple of guys just stepped up. Anthony Carter really turned
it up and Malik Allen made things happen. We could really see the energy shift our way. It was
a nice slow come back. Mike James was amazing, no one could stop him. Then in the third and
fourth quarter we just took off. We were containing the boards so well. They didn’t have a
chance to get back on defense. It surprised me to see how good of a transition team we were.
We worked the zone better then we have had all year. Everyone was talking. It was a fun game.
We haven’t had this kind of fun all year.”
HEAT Forward Caron Butler
On the game:
“Offensively I was rolling. My teammates were finding me and I was knocking down shots. That’s
the role I want, to be the energizer and make things happen, with my teammates feeding off me.
Brian Grant grabbed me by the neck in the huddle and told me that the team was going to run with
me and feed off me. I had to do what he told me. It was like redemption. It (the last game in
Minnesota) was a crazy game up there in Minnesota. We didn’t match their energy up there, so
this time around we had a lot of energy. Their stars still played good, but everybody on our
team was just clicking.”
On coming back from 16 points down at the end of the 1st quarter:
“It does a lot for your confidence; especially against a team like Minnesota. They have a MVP
candidate on the team, so to come back on a team like that means a lot.”
HEAT Forward Malik Allen
On the game:
“I thought we go a little more physical. We muscled up on them and it took away from their game.
If you let them run their game they’ll execute you to death. That’s what happened in the first
game. Tonight we were ahead of the play. We were very intense and just trying to make things
difficult for them. We were getting the ball out and guys were just converting in the open court.”
On Caron Butler’s performance:
“He finishes as well as anyone in the league. His energy demands that you run with him. Over
the last couple of games your seeing how good he really is.”
Timberwolves Head Coach Flip Saunders
On the game:
“I thought what happened was a dangerous thing. We had played this team (Miami HEAT) recently
and we had beat them. In this game, we were up by a lot of points in the first quarter. We
then went to our bench and stopped moving the ball. We became selfish and just stopped scoring.
Then they got aggressive. They started running the ball. They got 20 lay-ups. If you came in
today and analyzed both teams, you would never guess that our team is the one going to the
playoffs.”
“This was one of the worst games of the season, based upon having control of the game in the
first quarter and based upon how it ended up. I am more disappointed in how we played than the
final score. If we play the right way, we can play against anybody. If we don’t play the right
way, we can get beat. We can get beat badly and we proved that tonight.”
On the three point shooting:
“We have taken too many three point shots recently. We took 14 tonight. We can’t do that,
because every time we miss, we give up a fast break bucket the other way. We normally don’t
like to shoot threes. We like to play inside-out basketball. But we had no legs. We were
2-for-14. That is what I mean about playing too selfish.”
On the play of Kevin Garnett:
“He started off strong, but we sat him a lot in the second quarter. By the time he got back
in the game, they (Miami Heat) started playing a zone. He was making plays, but our guys
weren’t making any shots.”
Timberwolves Forward Kevin Garnett
On the game:
“We got away from a lot of the things we were doing in the first half. In the 2nd quarter, I
came into the huddle and told them that we need to regain our composure and swing the ball.
We never responded. We can’t have lapses like this.”
On Miami's defense:
“They dug in a little bit. (Mike) James and (Anthony) Carter dug in when we drove to the
basket. The first time we played them they didn’t do that. Miami’s not known for trapping.
They were much more aggressive than they were in Minneapolis. They turned it into a dogfight.
They were trying to run and pound it inside.”
On shooting 2 of 14 from behind the arc:
“We are an inside outside type of team. We don’t shoot threes.”
Timberwolves Guard Troy Hudson
On the game:
“I don’t think we were tired, we just didn’t come to play. We need to remember this game and
focus on trying not to let it occur again. We could have made some extra passes tonight. ”
