HEAT Head Coach Pat Riley
On HEAT loss:
"It was one of those games. It was going to be a 60 or 70 point game. I thought both teams defended situations extremely well. They knew what we were going to do and we knew what they were going to do. It came down to individual challenges for the most part. Post up situations. But at 45-37 I felt we had the game a little bit in control. We just stopped getting back on defense. We stopped trying to match up with their shooters. We couldn't make any plays going down the stretch. They deserved to win because they kept digging it out. "
On offensive trouble:
"They are not making shots. We had a ton of open shots the first half. We had a lot of good shots and with the exception of Eddie (Jones) going on a bit of a run where we made two or three in a row. We kept getting good shots and we also got layups that we couldn't finish. It's going to kill you. Shooting 33% you shouldn't have a chance to be in the game."
On slow start:
"Slow start and slow finish. We started slow because we missed four or five opportunities to finish a good play. It comes down to being able to convert."
On injuries:
"We're all healthy. If you are out on the court you are not hurt. This time of the season everyone has sprains. That's not an excuse."
On Kurt Thomas:
"He is having an absolute all-star year. "
HEAT Center/Forward Brian Grant
On the game:
On HEAT loss:
"Our defense started breaking down. We started missing layups. We started missing open shots. Eventually they just overtook us."
On disappointment of not finishing:
"It was a good game. We just didn't finish it out. We could add this to the list of games that we should have won."
HEAT Guard Eddie Jones
On the Knicks:
"Coach said before the game to play these guys one-on-one. Take the challenge. That's what we were doing. "
On third quarter:
"In the third quarter things were going great for us. We had them up by eight. We had a few turnovers and we couldn't get back defensively. We let those guys get the transition points. That was the key to the third quarter run they had. Not getting back, that would hurt any ball club."
On missing shots:
"I got good looks. I just missed shots. I continued to take those same shots. Bottom line, those shots were going to fall for me. I know it."
On ankle:
"I felt like I bent my ankle behind me which scared me a little bit."
On scoring only 65 points:
"I am upset. Especially now because we have been putting a lot of points on the board. It is a sign they played good defense and a sign that we didn’t execute at all. We missed a lot of shots. We just have to believe that those shots will fall for us."
New York Head Coach Don Chaney
On the first half:
“It was a good thing they got it going in the third. But, we can’t have those dry quarters where we can’t score. We have to do the necessary things to get the basket in the hole. We didn’t play both sides of the floor early on. As a result of that, we didn’t get the shots we wanted. I thought we moved the ball better in the second half.”
On tonight’s win:
“An ugly win is just as nice as a pretty win. A win is a win. And, that’s why I have to congratulate our guys. On a night where we really struggled to score, we managed to come away with the win.”
On Shandon Anderson:
“I thought Shandon did a great job of carrying some of the scoring load, when we needed it. He’s an energy guy. He has to play with energy and he’s better when he’s surrounded by other energy guys.”
On the Knicks-HEAT rivalry:
“In looking at the players that were here back then, in the highly-competitive days, they’re no longer here. The whole mystique about the rivalry and the two teams battling it out, I think, is in the past now. The people aren’t here anymore. Guys have moved on. What you see now is a totally different trend with different guys.”
New York Guard Allan Houston
On tonight’s game:
“We just wanted to win the game, that’s what it’s all about. That’s it and we got a win, no matter how it looks. That’s the beautiful thing with playing team sports. I had a terrible day, but we won and it wasn’t a pretty win for anyone but like I said we got the win.
On his performance:
“Like I said that’s the beauty of team sports, sometimes you just don’t have good days. Some days you may not be that great, but you can still win the game and be happy.”
On the first half:
“I don’t know. Spree was doing well, but it seemed like we were just in a funk. The score at halftime was 30-27 and both teams scored very low. At least we kept them down, but we did not get things done offensively, except for Sprewell.”
New York Center Kurt Thomas
On tonight’s game:
“It was not a pretty game. Especially in the first half. We had to pick it up on the offensive and defensive end in the second half to get the win. We are glad we came out with the win.”
On defense:
“At times we were playing solid defense. Everybody was playing solid defense and helping with each other. We just kept scratching and scraping and did whatever we could.”
New York Forward/Guard Latrell Sprewell
On tonight’s game:
“Anytime that you win, that’s what you set out to do. When you accomplish it and you can come into the locker room feeling good. We knew we had not executed and we had not made shots. The good thing is you look up at the score and you are only down by three.”
On Second quarter:
“Even though we were disappointed with having nine points in the quarter you cannot feel too bad because it is still a close game.”
On Shandon Anderson’s game:
“He definitely gave us a lift. He got a couple of baskets for us and got the crowd back into it. We had a little momentum going and forced Miami to call timeout. After that it was pretty much who is going to take over the game.”
