Reef to Raise Funds Through Rebound America

October 3, 2001

Abdur-Rahim has always been a presence in the charity and community efforts in Atlanta.
Hawks forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim announced today the launch of "Rebound America," a campaign seeking to raise funds for victims of the September 11th attacks on America.

Abdur-Rahim will contribute $100 for every rebound that he has during the 2001-2002 NBA season to "Rebound America." While making his own personal contribution, he is also soliciting the assistance of other NBA players to join his efforts in making a difference to those touched by the attacks. He will encourage other players to make contributions based on statistical performance of rebounds, assists, steals, blocks or a monetary contribution of their choice. All proceeds will benefit the families of victims of the tragic events of September 11th.

"Like everyone else in America, I have a strong and sincere need to assist with the relief efforts. Creating this fund allows me and my colleagues to put our basketball talents to work off the court and make a difference," says Abdur-Rahim.

Abdur-Rahim anticipates raising significant dollars with the help of colleagues in the NBA. Players who have already committed to the fund include Gary Payton (assists), Damon Stoudamire (assists), Stephon Marbury (assists), Alonzo Mourning (blocks) and Brian Grant (rebounds).

Abdur-Rahim totaled 735 rebounds last season with the Vancouver Grizzlies, and was a member of the USA Basketball team that won a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics.
