With the 43rd overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks selected center Walter Tavares from Gran Canaria of the Spanish ACB League. Tavares measures in at a massive 7'2", 260 pounds with a 7'9" wingspan.
Tavares’ exceptional length makes him a terrific rim defender, and he averaged 1.5 blocks per game in Spain last season in 21.2 minutes. Tavares also averaged 6.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game on 58.5 percent shooting and 72.2 percent from the free throw line.
Danny Ferry noted that Tavares was an “interesting prospect” because of his unique size and talent. Tavares has only been playing basketball for four years, beginning at age 18, and is an exceptionally raw player, but Ferry said the organization was excited to help be a part of his development as a player and that the risk at 43 was worth it for his unique size and potential skill-set.
