Marvin Williams to Host the "Strike the R-Word" Bowling Event
Marvin Williams to Host the “Strike the R-word”
Bowling Event for Special Olympics Georgia
Atlanta, GA (September 14, 2010) - When the R-word “retard” is mentioned around the Atlanta Hawks’ Marvin Williams, he cringes as he remembers Special Olympics friends he made through volunteering in his hometown of Bremerton, Washington.
“The ‘R-word’ is completely demeaning,” said Williams, a Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) honorary board member. “It rejects and dehumanizes everyone, especially the many people with disabilities. It is up to all of us to speak out and make it clear that using the R-word is simply unacceptable.”
In an effort to stamp out the R-word and to support SOGA athletes, Williams is hosting the “Strike the R-word”bowling event on September 23 from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. at 300 Atlanta (2175 Savoy Drive, Atlanta GA 30341, located on the access road off Exit 30 on I-285).
In addition to bowling with Williams, the event will include food and beverages, an “I Bowled with Marvin Williams” T-shirt, free shoe rentals and a goody bag. For those interested in participating, tickets cost $40. All proceeds go to SOGA and donations are tax deductible. Trophies will be awarded for the most strikes and gutter balls, and to the recipient of Marvin’s MVP award.
Additionally, throughout the evening, drawings will be held and prizes awarded including a two-night stay at the InterContinental San Juan Resort and Casino, in addition to Hawks tickets, and shopping and spa gift cards. Tickets for the drawings are $5 each or three for $10. For more information, log onto www.specialolympicsga.org or call 770-414-9390 ext. 117.
