SALT LAKE CITY (July 13) --
Despite Al Horford's game-high 18 points, the Atlanta Hawks summer league squad
came up short against the host Utah Jazz, 64-63, on Friday night in both teams'
opener at the Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City.
"We gave a tremendous effort tonight, especially defensively," said Hawks summer
league head coach Larry Drew. "Our guys did a good job working together in
trying to execute our defensive game plan. But we didn't make the play at the
end."
The Hawks were down two (62-60) with 11.7 seconds left, when they executed the
drawn-up play perfectly, resulting in a Shelden Williams three-point play with
5.9 seconds left to go ahead by one. But Utah's Paul Millsap scored on a putback
with 1.7 seconds remaining for the winning basket. Williams' 75-foot heave
bounced off the backboard and rim as time expired.
Supporting Horford's 18, Williams scored 11 points to go along with his 8
boards, while Acie Law had 7 points and a team-high 5 assists.
"Al was a beast around the basket," Drew said. "He played like an NBA veteran
tonight."
After one period, the teams were tied at 18, as both clubs shot the ball well
from the field (Atl-54.5, Utah-57.1). The second quarter was more of a defensive
battle, and Jarrius Jackson's long jumper at the buzzer knotted the score at 33.
Utah snagged a one-point advantage through three, before the see-saw fourth.
Millsap, Morris Almond and Matt Lojeski led Utah with 12 points apiece.
The Hawks next face San Antonio on Saturday at 6:30 ET.
