NBA Draft 2002 Hawks Headquarters
First Round Pick to Clippers, Hawks to pick 37th in Draft
The Hawks entered the 2002 NBA Draft Lottery with slightly less than a three percent chance of getting the first overall pick, and unfortunately for Atlanta, failing to reach the top three spots meant the Hawks would lose their first round pick to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers will get the eighth-overall pick to complete the sign-and-trade deal that brought forward Lorenzen Wright to town in August 1999. The Hawks will have only one selection in this year's draft - a second round pick, #37 overall. There was a possibility of the Hawks' receiving Detroit's first round pick in this year's draft (#23) that's owed to the Houston Rockets, to complete last season's trade for the draft rights of Maryland's Terence Morris. Detroit has elected to use that selection in this year's draft. The Rockets must provide the Hawks with a first round selection by the 2004 Draft.
Is It #37, or #36??
In actuality, the Hawks will make the 36th selection in this year's draft instead of #37 as a result of the NBA's on-going sanctions against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Timberwolves will not have a first round pick in this year's draft.
Hawks Draft Prospects
With their slim chances of getting a first round selection, the Hawks have limited the number of prospects for individual private workouts in comparison to last year. After a May 29 workout at Philips Arena, the basketball operations staff attended the Chicago Pre-Draft Camp (June 2-7) to further evaluate prospects for this year's draft. According to Hawks VP/General Manager Pete Babcock, the organization will hold additional workouts following the Chicago camp, but at this time, it isn't known who will be invited to Atlanta for future sessions.
The Last Time...
If you were wondering when was the last time Atlanta did not have a first round pick, think back to the 1994 Draft. The Hawks' first round pick was sent to the Clippers as a result of the Dominique Wilkins-Danny Manning trade.
HAWKS CURRENT AND FUTURE PICKS
2002 - First Round - conveyed to Los Angeles Clippers to complete the Lorenzen Wright deal
Second Round - #37
2003-06 - First Round - own pick belongs to Hawks
Second Round - own pick belongs to Hawks
Atlanta will receive Indiana's first round pick in one of the next two seasons . Next year, the Hawks will obtain the selection if the Pacers end up with picks #16 through #29. Indiana's pick is protected if it is numbers one through 15. If the pick extends to the 2004 Draft, Atlanta will receive it if it is #14 through #29.
The Hawks are owed a first round pick by the Detroit Pistons (through Philadelphia and Houston) in 2003 or 2004 at Detroit's choosing. The Pistons must inform Atlanta of their plans by June 10 of each year.
Atlanta will receive a second round pick from the Orlando Magic to culminate the Anthony Johnson deal (February 24, 2000) in 2003 or 2004.
