ON THE 2005 NBA ALL-ROOKIE TEAM
Josh Smith and Josh Childress named to Second Team squad
ATLANTA, GA (May 5, 2005) -- Atlanta Hawks first-year players Josh
Smith and Josh Childress were both honored by the National Basketball
Association this afternoon when the duo was amongst a talented group of rookies
named to the 2004-05 got milk? NBA All-Rookie Team. Both were chosen to the
All-Rookie Second Team, becoming the first Hawk players selected to the
All-Rookie team since former Atlanta guard Jason Terry received that honor
(another Second Team award winner) in 1999-2000.
“We are very happy for both guys and they are certainly deserving of this
honor" said Hawks Executive Vice President and General Manager Billy Knight. "Josh and Josh made great strides over the course of their first seasons in the
NBA, and this gives them a tremendous platform to continue working hard and
improving their skills towards developing into outstanding players and key
members of our franchise as we move forward."
Joining Smith and Childress on the Second Team were Nenad Krstic of New Jersey,
Jameer Nelson of Orlando and Boston’s Al Jefferson.
Two players who each received league awards in recent days led the got milk?
All-Rookie First Team - Charlotte’s Emeka Okafor, who was selected the 2004-05
NBA Rookie of the Year, and Chicago’s Ben Gordon, who was picked as the 2004-05
NBA Sixth Man award recipient. They were accompanied on the First Team by the
first overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, Orlando’s Dwight Howard, and
Philadelphia’s Andre Iguodala and Chicago’s Luol Deng.
Smith, who finished with 22 of a possible 58 points (and three First Team
votes), finished with rookie averages of 9.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists

NBA. Among rookie rankings, Smith was in the top ten in several categories:
scoring (8th), rebounds (3rd), offensive rebounding (tied for 5th), field goal
percentage (tied for 9th), steals (10th), minutes played (5th), double-doubles
(4th), and efficiency rating (5th). A participant in the got milk? Rookie

Rising Stars Slam Dunk title, recording three perfect scores of 50 in four
dunks.
In a December 18 game at Dallas, Smith became the youngest player ever - 19
years, 13 days - in league history to reject ten shots in a game. He was the
17th overall selection in the 2005 Draft.
His backcourt teammate Childress, garnered 21 points (and four First Team
votes), after registering top 10 totals in virtually every rookie category. The
sixth pick in last year’s Draft, Childress was sixth in points per game (10.1),
fourth in rebounds (6.0, and third in offensive board work at 2.4), eighth in
field goal percentage (.470), second in free throw percentage (.823), third in
double-doubles (12), tied for eight in assists (1.9), seventh in steals (0.9),
tied for 10th in blocks (0.4), fourth in minutes played (29.7) and fourth in
efficiency rating. Down the stretch he finished strong, recording 12
double-doubles in his last 35 games, averaging 14.9 ppg and 7.9 rpg.
The voting panel consisted of the NBA’s 30 head coaches, who were asked to
select five players for the first team and five players for the second team,
regardless of position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players on their
own team. Two points were awarded for first team votes and one for second team
vote.
