WASHINGTON DC, September 14, 2010 – Sporting Generosity, an organization designed to identify the contributions to the community made by professional athletes and organizations alike, has named the Atlanta Hawks’ Al Horford the September Player of the Month. This year alone, Horford has contributed approximately $50,000 to Project Medishare, a 501c3 benefiting the people of Haiti, as well as made significant financial contributions to Caminar Latino, a local Atlanta charity designed to transform the lives and communities of Latino families affected by violence.

Horford has also created a program called Al’s Amigos, which is a program to assist underprivileged youth in the Atlanta area. In addition to purchasing Hawks tickets for home games, Horford creates his own holiday events where he works with local charities to identify children in need of social enrichment. Once identified, Horford treats these children to a night out for dinner, games, prizes and more. Horford has provided for this the past two years and will continue the tradition this upcoming holiday season. "Growing up I realized that some people are less fortunate than others. Now that I am an NBA player and in a position to help, I have the opportunity and responsibility to make a difference," Horford said.

In August, Horford hosted a free basketball clinic in his home country of the Dominican Republic. This is in addition to his participation in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program that took place in Singapore earlier in the summer, as well as his participation in the Hawks’ sponsored summer basketball camps.

One of the most active Hawks players in the community, Horford is the face of the team’s Fast Break for Reading program, and is also a past recipient of the Jason Collier Memorial Trophy (presented annually to the individual who best exemplifies the characteristics Collier displayed off the court as a community ambassador) and was a recipient of the NBA’s Community Assist Award.
