HAWKS ANNOUNCE 2006-07 NBA REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
Atlanta to host New York in home opener November 3 at Philips Arena
This year’s schedule features special Friday night start times – 7:30 p.m.
ATLANTA, GA (Aug. 1, 2006) -- The Atlanta Hawks and the National Basketball Association
(NBA) today announced the 2006-07 regular season schedule, which has the Hawks
opening on the road Wednesday, November 1st at Philadelphia. Two nights later,
Atlanta tips off its 39th season in the city as the New York Knicks visit
Philips Arena in the first of 12 Friday games with special start times of 7:30
p.m.
The league's highly anticipated 61st season commences with "NBA Opening
Week...It's Game Time!", a new basketball-themed season launch inspired by the
hard work and passion of the players featuring special events and NBA Cares
community initiatives in each team market.
Six of the Hawks first ten games will be played in Atlanta this season, in a
major difference from last year’s schedule which saw Atlanta on the road for the
seven of the first 11 contests.
Much like a season ago, the majority of Atlanta’s home games will start at 7
p.m., with the exception of the Friday night and five afternoon tilts – four on
Sundays – which will be played at 2 p.m. This year’s annual Martin Luther King,
Jr. holiday game will take place on Monday, January 15 at 2 p.m., as the Boston
Celtics come to Philips.
The 41-game home schedule is highlighted by 19 weekend dates – with 12 on
Fridays and seven on Saturday nights. On three occasions during the year, the
Hawks will play four straight home games, and five straight on the road twice.
Atlanta’s busiest month of action occurs in December when the Hawks play a total
of 16 games, with ten of them away from home. Hawks fans will find the home team
locally nine times in March, the most of any month, and for the first time since
2002-03, Atlanta will play back-to-back home games (on March 9 (Memphis) and 10
(Minnesota)).
Head coach Mike Woodson and the Hawks will host such notable opponents like the
NBA World Champion Miami Heat and Finals MVP Dwayne Wade on Saturday, November
18 and Wednesday, March 21; the Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks on
Sunday, March 25; USA Basketball team member and All-Star LeBron James and the
Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 27; and the
two-time reigning NBA MVP Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns in their only
appearance in Atlanta on Sunday, February 25.
The 2006 preseason and local TV schedules should be released in the coming
weeks, and the start of training camp is set for Tuesday, October 3 at Philips
Arena. Atlanta’s annual media day activities are set for 3 p.m., Monday, October
2 at 3 p.m., on the practice court at Philips.
