The Hawks wore their blue and green jerseys from the 1971-72 season during preseason before switching to new red & white digs for the regular season.
This advertisement appeared in the Atlanta Journal to promote the Hawks' second exhibition for the 1972-73 season. It would be the only game Erving would play in Atlanta as a Hawk.
Erving, wearing #54, made an impression on the home fans and media despite the late collapse by the Hawks.

The Hawks held Erving out of the team's third exhibition game to show "good faith", but he returned for one final game as a Hawk later that same week.

In 2011, Topps released a rare negative of a posed photo of Erving in a Hawks' uniform.
Erving has autographed the warm up that he would have worn if he would have suited up on opening night.
On April 8, 1987, before Dr. J's final game in Atlanta, the Hawks presented Erving with a replica of the No. 54 jersey he wore during the '72 preseason.
