Atlanta Hawks point guard Dennis Schröder scored 16 points and dished five assists, but the German national team suffered a heartbreaking 68-67 defeat to Poland in the first game of the EuroBasket qualifying second round on Sunday.

Schröder shot well (6-14) and also pulled down three rebounds, but his game-winning shot attempted missed as the buzzer sounded.

Germany plays six total games, two each against the other three teams in their group, and must finish second to at least have a chance at advancing.

Game 2 is against Austria on Wednesday.  Austria beat Luxembourg 84-76 Sunday.
