Atlanta Hawks

Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame, as you may have heard. We here at Hawks.com cannot get enough of Nique, and are constantly scouring the internet for video of his days as the Human Highlight Film. On December 1st, the Hawks will be honoring Dominique as part of Hardwood Classic Nights, with the team wearing throwback uniforms representing the 1986 season.

To get ready for the festivities, Hawks.com is counting down the 21 greatest moments of Wilkins' career. Check back daily as we update the countdown every weekday leading up to the Dec. 1 match-up with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

February 7, 1988: Wilkins scores 29 points in the NBA All-Star game.

In two previous All-Star appearances, Dominique hadn't done much to distinguish himself, scoring a total of 22 points on 24 shots. But during the midseason classic in 1988, Wilkins stepped his game up dramatically, playing 30 minutes and pouring in 29 points as the Eastern Conference took a close 138-133 victory over the West.

Just a day after a disappointing loss to Michael Jordan in the Slam Dunk Contest, Wilkins showed he was over the disappointment, connecting on 12-of-22 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line. He was also helped by teammate Doc Rivers, who was playing in his first All-Star game, and by head coach Mike Fratello, who coached the Eastern All-Stars.

Nique's performance would earn him several second-place votes for All-Star MVP, but Michael Jordan was the unanimous choice as he scored 40 points in front of his hometown fans.

"He was great in that game, but we definitely did what we could to help him out. There was one time where we had a three-on-one, and I had Dominique on my right and MJ on my left. Let's just say it was pretty obvious where that ball was going.

After the game, they accused me of playing favorites, and I was like, damn right! (laughing)"
