Run DMC at Philips Arena on March 21

The Atlanta Hawks present another post-game concert in the Budweiser Concert Series:
RUN-DMC
“BACK IN BLACK”
Following the Hawks vs. Knicks game, March 21st, 7:30pm

As the first and the greatest of hip-hop’s superstars, Run-DMC’s mission has always been to “crash through walls, go through floors, bust through ceilings, and knock down doors.” And this group trio has done just that, as one looks at Run-DMC’s influence on popular culture during the fourteen years that has elapsed since they first released.

Joseph Simmons (Run), Darryl McDaniels (DMC) and Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay), were the first rappers to earn a gold album (for Run-DMC/Profile in 1984), the first to earn a platinum album (for King of Rock/Profile in 1985), the first to go multi-platinum (for Raising Hell/Profile in 1986), the first to have their videos played on MTV, the first to appear on “American Bandstand and “Saturday Night Live,” and the first rap band to grace the cover of Rolling Stone and Spin. In addition to their musical milestones, Run-DMC is also responsible for the introduction of new dances, new fashions, new language, and new energy.

And the most impressive of their long list of attributes, as writer Rob Tannenbaum recently stated in Rolling Out, “Run-DMC holds a fist full of rap firsts…it’s hardly surprising that it’s now the first rap group to come back from the dead.” Impressive, an understatement. Run-DMC released their seventh album Down With the King/Profile in 1994 that quickly earned them another gold album and their first gold single. The impact of these New York native’s music can not be left there. “…Forever separating rap into the new and the old school,” Run-DMC brings today’s pop-culture their newest album Crown Royal/Arista in 2000.

Their claim to fame started with just a beatbox, two turntables and two microphones, and fourteen years later, Run-DMC continues to thrive, stunning the world as the first hip-hop group inducted into Hollywood's Rockwalk. The group's handprints and signatures were added to the sidewalk gallery February 2002. When asked by the New York Times how the group has stayed together so long, the quietly intense DMC said: “Run-DMC is like a marriage. You’re not suppose to break up what God brings together. Run-DMC is here to stay. This is what we do.”
